I'd have to say the Abrams wins.. its still the best MBT out there and its says a lot that the Russian T90MS prototype is still playing catch up to the latest fielded version of the Abrams. Right now the main weakness of the M1A2 is its gas guzzling petrol turbine engines, but that'll be corrected with the upcoming M1A3 diesel.

M1A2 SEPv2 TUSK with CROWS remote weapon station. Notice the "new" infantry telephone feature.. ww2 tech makes a come back. finally. It turns out that all the fancy wireless satellite links were useless to a grunt standing right outside an Abrams.

Modern armies are still gonna need tanks for warfighting across open terrain.. an army with tanks plus ATGMs will defeat an army with just ATGMs.

Anyhoo check out the Merkava's TROPHY anti-missile/rocket system in action. It shoots down incoming anti-tank guided missiles with a shotgun-like blast..

Probably my tank of choice... a bit slow and bulky but the Merkava mk4m is probably the most survivable tank in the world right now. Putting the engine up front is a brilliant design choice imo.

I'm sure there's folks who are well paid to worry about that. Based on past history.. for the past several decades..Russian tanks were over-rated.
This sucker is ..likely..better than a T-72 but to an Abrams a T-72 was just a speed bump. I don't know how hard it is to kill an Abrams...I know nobody seems to have done it yet. Nobody has yet shot down an F-15 fighter..and the F-22 is said to be way better. It's one thing to win all your football games. It's even better if the other guys fail to score.

I believe the Iraqi army lost a few Abrams tanks fighting ISIS... they received some "refurbished" units a while back.

Perhaps the new Russian tank will be field tested in the Ukraine.

In regards to our military. I dunno. I believe our military industrial complex exists to use taxpayer monies to provide jobs and enrich corporations more than anything else. Hell, some programs continue for decades and never produce anything of value while siphoning trillions of dollars away from the taxpayers. God knows our military isn't being used to protect the nation from invasion.

Having said that while our military is great for taking out stone aged goat herders but I have to wonder just how well our forces would do against a modern military. In all fairness the fact we haven't won an actual war since ww2 makes me wonder if we (as a society) are even capable of waging war anymore.
Bro, look at MRAP's. We have so many of them leftover we're just selling them cheap to police forces and whatnot. The government is literally building weapons to create jobs, which in turn is taking money out of our taxes.

    It's not a vicious circle, it's a stupid circle.

As a long-time Tank Enthusiast, I must say that you are spot-on.

These days, these behemoths can simply be taken out too easily by Helicopter, Fixed wing aircraft, Artillery, or, shoulder-launched missles.

While they may still have a place on the BATTLEFIELD, they are largely ineffective in cities.

Ironically, the "bigger, badder" tanks have been some wonderful pieces of engineering, but....great victories came from the smaller, faster tanks, that were primarily infantry-support, and Forward Observers, calling in air and artillery strikes.

    In World War II:

--The German Panzers (Mostly smaller, lighter vehicles) raged across Europe, when the Luftwaffe held air superiority, and the tanks were used as support/rapid recon.

--The Tiger Tank, perhaps the finest of the Second World War, was a wonderful, but expensive and hard to build vehicle. While it could tear other tanks up, it did not enjoy the victory of it's smaller predecessors, as it did not air support, or, the greater numbers....

--The T-34, perhaps the BEST tank of the War, was a fast, but very well protected vehicle, made in mass quantities. It was not pretty, it had continual mechanical problems, and, it's tanks crews got the tee total shit beat out of them, simply by riding in it (Russian tanks, in the past, have considered the comfort of the crew to be of nil importance.) All that said, it was hell on a battlefield....

--The Sherman. Although considered a "Main" Battle Tank, the Sherman was downright whimpy, compared to most of the German Main Battle Tanks. That did not matter. It was made in ridiculous numbers (Thus parts were interchangeable), was fast, and....American Tank Crews often called in air and artillery strikes, while serving mostly as Infantry support.....

The lesson I get from all of this is that Tank TACTICS are what makes them powerful.

And, I honestly think, that far more important than their armor, is their SPEED. (Thus, today, the Armored Personnell Carriers can fill the "lightning" war role, formerly held by Tanks.....)

Pity the poor bastard who had to tell Der Fuhrer that the "subhuman" Russians had a better tank....... being produced in huge numbers.

In retrospect maybe they should have concentrated on improving the already decent panzers and not fooled around with the [although pretty cool] Tiger and Panther.
