    Does anyone know...

    ...much about Russian machine guns?

Specifically, what sort of a gun is this Marine on board a Russian warship is wielding?

Photo circa 2009 or thereabouts, ship is battle-cruiser "Peter the Great".

It intrigued me, because I always thought the biggest and nastiest hand fired machine gun in Russia is the Kord like this lad was using in Syria recently to take the heads off some big, bad Islamists

The Kord, far as I know, is the main machine gun on the Russian Navy's warships too

So, what the heck is that thing in first photo???

I'm really curious. I'll research more on my own, but if anyone has the answer for me, I'd appreciate it

    It's a Kord 12.7 heavy machine gun.

    Modern Firearms - Kord 12.7

Yeah, I know the latter two pics are of the Kord. I was asking about the FIRST one. Thanks for contribution anyway...

Anyhow, I think I figured it out myself.

It looks like a Degtyaryov DS-39

Wow. WWII gun first introduced in 1939, still in use in 21st Century! That's Russia, though... If it's still good, why get rid of it, is the prevailing philosophy over there...

So, what's the difference between that and a dshk?

To me, it looks like a DShK 12.7, anti air capability. Introduced in 1938, still in use. Rusty thing on that pic above, probably came with the boat.

    So it is, thanks all

The "boat" was built in the 80s, I beliece. I suppose the gun could still come with it.

Hell, the Ma Deuce was introduced in 1933, and that's not going anywhere either.

Nothing like shooting your high caliber machine gun from your porch on a Sunday. God bless America...

I have never fired any of these but they look clunky as hell. It seems you would be spend more time fixing them then actually shooting them.

You do that with any firearm, don't you? All weapons are supposed to only be used in practice.
