I'm happy to hear that you do not consider the French cowards, but many of your countrymen have made noises to that effect - to wit: "cheese-eating surrender monkeys," etc. And implicit in 'sucking at military engagements' is the twin presumptions of ineptitude and cowardice - neither of which may be laid at any entire nation's door.

Look on the brightside. After admitting some military flaws, they took up rugby. Just a shame the Vichy got rid of the proper 'league' game. Come on Catalans!

With respect, my friend, it was the British armed forces which burned Washington in 1814. The British North America Act, the enabling instrument of the nation which became Canada, did not come into being until 1867. It was heavily outnumbered British troops recently returned from the Napoleonic wars, who routed the American militiamen at Bladensburg, and marched on Washington, DC.

    True.

On 3 August 1814, a force of British soldiers landed in Chesapeake Bay and advanced quickly onto Washington with 4,000 Redcoats. American militia were no match for the British veterans of European battles, and President Madison and the Cabinet soon fled the city. In revenge for the American burning of York (now Toronto) in 1813, they burned many of the public buildings, including the Presidential Mansion. The Mansion was later repainted and became popularly known as the White House.

Nah! Rugby Union is the pukkah white chaps' game - Rugby League is the 'bread and circuses' version for the plebs.
