They retired it once before, tried to replace it with the F-16.. Retirement didn't last long.

The A-10 was DESIGNED ground up to be the ultimate CLOSE AIR SUPPORT. It is PROVEN. The Army and Marines would be HAPPY to have a bunch of them. the GAU 8 gun EATS tanks and Anything. the Maverick missiles are SUPERIOR to Hellfires.

Warthogs can get close to the mud ,where the soldiers are. They stay till they fck over the bad guys. Warthogs are DESIGNED and built to be TOUGH, to take hits and still do the job and return. We have NO other Fighter made to survive taking a lot of hits.

SHOW ME. Show me an A 10 B, a modernized Warthog. While there's "upgrades" that can be done....some of the beauty of a Warthog.. is it ain't full of costly/vulnerable "fancy stuff". It's been a LONG time since we had a challenge to our air to air fighters. So.. the F-22 is replacing the F-15 (still damn effective) and .....it's a legit plane.

FACT......we OFTEN have fought LOW TECH enemies.
We get in a WAR where CLOSE AIR is what MATTERS... not a super fast Air- Air jet or a big bomber.
GIMME a REAL Super Warthog. Better Night ability, some 7.62 mm machine guns to shoot up INFANTRY. likely we now have a bit higher tech for the armor. Keep it "low _ slow" and a MEAN UGLY bird.DO NOT get stupid. F-35 can SHINE in the Wild Weasel Anti Radar role. I am FINE on that. NOTHING except warthogs are built as a flying TANK.

Have the right tool for the job. A do it all wonder weapon doesn't really exist. How much longer can the A10 be maintained and serviced? Most of our wars are against lower tech enemies. The Gau 8 is really to heavy for Taliban type enemies. AC 130 gunships ...now that's a killer. Though best used at night.

Slap a gatling gun and some hard points on this and you'll be good to go..

a GAU 8 is not just ANY Gatling gun. It's HUGE, the ammo is BIG. You'd need a bigger drone than that one.

The Warthogs have been OUTSTANDING. I WOULD say the SMART thing is make a Warthog -2 and Don't change the stuff that works.

In Iraq/Kuwait, fact is they endured hits well, they could do a lot of sorties BECAUSE they were not delicate or fussy.
The USAF, ALWAYS bitched, wanted stuff flying in and out, high and fast. The idea of a mudfighter "down there" helping the footsoldiers? Yuck. the USAF declared it ' obsolete" BEFORE it was a STAR in our last 3 wars.wrong (each time)

Slow? low altitude/ The IDEA is to be THERE for the GROUND TROUPS. Zoom by and go home? Not the same.
If we're using Warthogs, we HAVE an airbase and airsuperiority. warthog -2/ Add a couple machine guns to strafe infantry, have built in avionics for night. A-10 pilots used their Mavericks for night vision.
It does NOT need to zoom fast. It's agile, it's flying close enough to SEE stuff. It can get shot at and be okay.

I saw a documentary on the A-10 the about when they tried to kill it the first time. I loved what one pilot said about it.

"They started with an anti-tank gun and built an airplane around it."

A10 has many supporters but plane is getting old and hard to service.

The f35 project has sucked up so many dollars from existing needs.

Plans are to keep it around to at least 2021

Efforts are underway to try to find a suitable replacement.

As a JTAC who worked with the A-10's replacing it with anything other than a new platform based on the capabilities and strength of the A10 would be a grave mistake. They tried to do it once with the f15 (i believe) it was a miserable failure.

Can take massive damage, can do the work of a rotary wing better in many cases, massive force multiplier for ground forces, not as easy a target as you think.

    Scary thought indeed.

What if an adversary hacked into it, like has already been claimed?

Iran calims to have hacked into one of our recon drones a few years ago.

    Said they forced it down.

It went down and they got the drone.

Did they REALLY hack it? Dunno.

    The idea is certainly scary...

Or electronic warfare scrambled it's brains.
