    Drunk officer beat soldier

I wrote before about the scandal in the Russian Navy, regarding the apparent suicide of two young sailors on board the cruiser "Moskva": Murder on the "Moskva"

Now, a new scandal is breaking out in the Ground Forces, the Army.

Pavel Tilikanov, a young conscript from autonomous republic of Mordovia, on the Volga River

Before he was drafted just in June, he studied three years in a medical college. So, went into a medical unit.

On December 18th, he was stopped at base headquarters by sub-colonel Nikolai Vasiliev, his head superior officer, who had previously been accused of and photographed drinking on duty, in his office

In this case, Vasiliev was also visibly drunk. He yelled at the young soldier and forced him to kneel down and put his hands on the back of his head. He began kicking Pavel, in the head and body, and actually ended up literally kicking him all the way out the door into the yard outside. He also tore off Pavel's uniform jacket, while continuing to beat him.

Pavel ended up covered in blood, and spent 12 days in the infirmary.

Pavel stayed silent about it, until his mother got it out of him, on leave one day. She reported it to the national organization "Soldiers Mothers Committee", which is made up mostly of indeed women, mothers of conscripts, trying to ensure good treatment for their sons in the service. SMC investigated the incident. They found out that the same officer might have been involved in another incident, which received some publicity last year, when a young conscript deserted, ran away from his base, after he was assigned to the detail to wash the floor in the building, and an officer, allegedly also this Vasiliev, attacked him and beat him with his own mop and bucket for a bad job with the floor, leaving him a bloody mess.

SMC also uncovered other violent abuses by other officers.

The most disturbing thing is, this is not happening at some backwater unit in Siberia somewhere.

This is at the elite Taman Armored Division, here marching on Red Suare this year

This is considered the best Army unit, which defends the capital itself. As the video shows, they are the first to receive the new Armata tanks, and other advanced weapons.

If they are having such issues; it's much worse in other, less glorious units...

Humans are humans, it doesn't matter what kind of tank they drive.

I've never known alcohol to be selective.

The point is, this is supposed to be an elite unit. They ain't supposed to have such problems. Yet, based on what I am hearing from people who served in this Division over last twenty years, this is a chronic issue there, unfortunately. Just too many officers there who really should not still be there.

Being on the wrong side of history can break anyone.

Like the SS soldier breaking down on a train journey in Germany around 1944, telling a complete stranger about how we wants the war to take his life, because he can't live with his part in mass shooting of Jewish children in Lithuania. Not realizing that the woman, he's telling the story to is a German anti-Nazi partisan.

"Am I holding my arms up right, sir?"

It's just the usual Russian alcoholism, which affects sadly too many men there. Nothing to do with "history".

It would be curious to see the problems the guys in our elite units have.

I haven't heard of any but I wouldn't expect to either.

I'm sure they have their share of problems also though.

As I said, humans are humans.

That can only be further proof of the savagery that is taking place in Russia where apparently human life is cheap.
