    Tanks in Moscow

It's that time of the year... May 9th, Victory Day, is soon, and the military is rehearsing for the huge Parade that takes place on the annual holiday. Rehearsals go on for months before the Parade, so that everything is perfect by the final day.

Today the first vehicle rehearsal took place, with all kinds of heavy armor flowing into the city:

Today, Muskovites who came to watch along the designated routes could see, for first time, the BMPT "Terminator" heavy combat vehicle, meant to support tanks in battle: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-xHT7QBNFNo

It is a popular spectacle, Russians love their military, and even at the rehearsals, you often see large crowds out to take pics of all the vehicles and missiles and such

If you ask me though (and not just me)... this goes against the spirit of the whole holiday, these parades. The people who defeated Hitler back then, in '45, they fought, and sacrificed their lives, millions of them, to bring PEACE to their nation. Not for these militaristic displays, for Putin to wave his dick at the world, now, in 2018...

Not to mention the costs to repair the asphalt on many streets, after all the tanks and BTRs and armored missile vehicles roll through...

Isn’t there a May Day in a few weeks for this sort of thing?

Or is that no longer a thing?

My little hometown has a “big” festival for May Day. It’s a very Scottish affair with sword dancing and pole dancing and swarms of (now) Chinese and Indian and Russian looking children in kilts - so I assume it had British roots.

But when I mention it in Vancouver I get really strange looks.

“You’re going to a May Day parade? I didn’t know your town had fallen behind the iron curtain”

May Day is different lol That's May 1st.

It used to be very important in Soviet times, yes, International Workers Day, that's when they had huge demonstrations and everything

Today, the modern Communist Party still holds big celebrations for it too

and other groups join in also, labor unions, etc, in St. Petersburg last year, even a bunch of gay rights activists were able to join a May Day March, with rainbow flags and all

And police actually stopped, for once, a Orthodox Church group who wanted to beat them up! Remarkable, that was...

Here in Canada, I think also unions celebrate it, and also there is a Canadian Communist Party too, tiny and obscure as it may be lmao And folks from ex-USSR as well, sure
