Norwegians fought for RUSSIA in Syria?

On April 18, Skandinavisk frihet site published an interview titled “Exclusive interview: Scandinavians that fight against ISIS”. According to an interviewed volunteer, his subunit “was acting in Syria during winter, spring and summer in 2017.”

Skandinavisk frihet is a body of the right-wing organization Skandinaviska Förbundet in Sweden, founded in February 2018.
The volunteer being presented as a Norwegian said that the subunit named “Scandinavian” had been receiving orders from the Russian Armed Forces and had been included in the operational structure of pro-government forces operating in Syria.

The interviewee described the subunit as a section of a mounted infantry, which had possessed the access to battle tanks and heavy weaponry. The main goals were the collecting of surveillance information, exploration of enemy’s deployment and number of ISIS’ forces. Most of the members were from Scandinavian countries: Norway, Sweden, and Iceland.

According to the volunteer, the Scandinavian subunit also received Russia’s artillery support during actions against ISIS.

On May 11, Norwegian media outlet AldriMer.no published an article “Norwegians combatted in Syria on the Russian side” quoting the interview of Skandinavisk frihet site. According to AldriMer.no, the Norwegian Police Security Service (PST) replied that the Norway citizens’ participation in the foreign military actions could be under Criminal Rule.

AldriMer.no analyzed the photos featuring Norwegian and Scandinavian soldiers published by Skandinavisk frihet. The results showed that some of those photos had been taken in April and May of 2017, proving the soldier’s allegations. However, other photos were clear from metadata.

This is very interesting... I've seen discussions about it on Russian forums. Some think they are just mercenaries, but others see something much deeper and more... sinister (though, not necessarily from their point of view, of course lol)

These are far right radicals, who, for the most part, hate their own government. Russia seems to specifically pick out people like that.

Other such Westerners have also joined pro-Russian forces in East Ukraine.

Here, for example, a well known Russian neo-Nazi who has led his own pro-Moscow militia in Donbass (at left) with an Italian "volunteer", former Paratrooper and member of a neo-fascist group

A whole bunch of Italians there, all from far right organizations.

Well, some say folks like these are not just recruited to use them in these immediate conflicts. Rather, they are cultivated as potential sleeper cells. Some, like that Italian guy, are already ex-military vets with serious skills. Others get their training and combat experience in these battles. Possibly, along the way, they are indoctrinated with pro-Russian ideology, loyalty to Russia is developed in them.

Later, they return to their home countries. If ever there is a conflict between Russia and Europe/NATO, these people could easily be armed and ordered to stage violent disruptions and create mayhem in their countries. As one guy on a Russian board I frequent put it, "Remember Breivik? Well, these are dozens, maybe hundreds of potential Breiviks right here, we do not even know exactly how many of these guys there are/were..."

Hell of a strategy, if true... Evil, but... That is Putin, old school KGB, to the bone...

Most of them are white supremacists, nationalists of their race, they see a lot of kindred spirits in Russia. Some even, I have seen in their online posts, see Russia as the only proud white country left... Though Ukraine is pretty similar in that, and have plenty of own neo-Nazis and such. So, as far as Donbass, European far right volunteers went there for BOTH sides...

Yeah, but most Westerners who've gone to Syria as volunteers (aside from jihadis from Western countries, obviously) join the pro-US Kurdish units. I never heard of any Western group fighting under the Russians there before... It is very curious.

Maybe, though the French Foreign Legion was made up of mostly Germans at one time and France and Germany have a long history of contention. I'd still bet on the money, and maybe they figured on the winning side too.
