One of Russia's new Borei-class "boomers", RFS "Yuri Dolgoruky" fires off four "Bulava" ICBMs in quick succession hours ago, at a test rangein the Far North; the video also shows a bit of the activity on board the sub

The Boreis are intended to become the new backbone of Russia's nuclear deterrence

They are replacing the (only slightly larger) Soviet "Typhoon" behemoths. The "Yuri Dolgoruky", launched 10 years ago, in 2008, was the first, original vessel of the new class.

Putin's military planners know the folly of relying on silo and truck-based missiles on the ground, or on plane delivery by the air force. Submarines are the nuclear weapon of choice these days, and Russia too have been modernizing and enhancing their fleet accordingly.

They look great, but when one thinks about all kinds of other, everyday life things all the money being spent on these subs could have bought for regular Russian citizens... Makes one cringe...
