dunno. cost containment probably. as it is that QE class CV's service date keeps getting pushed back due to low funding. pic below in from inside the shipyard last week.. they dont seem to be in too big a hurry to finish it.

Perhaps Dangermoose has better insight into his MOD.

Because when France tried a nuclear powered aircraft carrier they had a lot of operational problems and the ship was rarely available. That's not a big problem if you have a lot of units (having one nuclear sub in the yard all the time out of a fleet of 12 is no problem for example), but if you only have one or two units it becomes a consideration.

This is why the US can do nuclear powered floating Fukushimas (11 units), but others can't.

We're broke, the aircraft we were planning on buying is turning out to be an overweight pig, buying the other version of the JSF means spending money we don't have on altering the ships, we might only be able to buy enough aircraft for one ship ... and we might not even be able to find money to operate that ship anyway.

Knowing past history they'll probably end up mothballed and sold off after completion.

Why not just give those earning $250k pounds and up a 5% tax break to pay for your fleet of new carriers and planes?

It's funny how our government can find hundreds of billions to bail out our bankrupt banks ... but can't find a measly 5 billion for a couple of boats.

It's because of the class warfare. If the rich were not being oppressed by the poor, you guys would probably have dozens of carriers.

We need to increase our Military, double the size of all branches. Triple the amount we currently spend on Defense. Thank God we have American loving Repubs in the House of Reps.

25 fleet carriers should be a good start I would think. I mean come on China is a deadly threat as we currently only have about 10 more Fleets then they do.

This could very well be the next Cold War, gentlemen. China will fund it with the interest they receive from loaning us money.

Its imperative we balance our budget in 2 years and pay off our debt in 5, all without raising taxes and cutting any Defense spending.

Time to lean forward in the Saddle, my fellow Americans. You Libs have had 50+ years more or less of running the Nation, time for Repubs and Teabaggers to get their 1/2 Century.

You won't recognize America after they do, I tell ya....
    A-men to that.

America is still the world's premiere international bully. And going broke in the effort, very similar to Great Britain in the 1880's when she first built the dreadnoughts. The dreadnoughts were the start of the long economic slide that was completed by 1942. It's hilarious how pictures of one little Chinese steamer carrier brings out so much chest thumping.

Agreed. US naval strategy presumes carrier survival, very much an open question. A lot of very important and expensive eggs are in every one of those baskets.
