    The US War Culture

Since the draft was ended we have become like a banana republic when it comes to the military.

First of all the us military is overpaid and has way too many benefits.

It used to be a matter of patriotism when people joined the military.

Now it's, be all you can greed.

Stop the wars, Stop the madness or we are going to wind up like the Roman Empire.

I don't disparage people in the military. But since 911 pay and benefits have increased a lot. Like, doubled or something.

And with all the disabled vets we're creating, I don't see how we're going to manage to keep them in prosthesis for life.

This endless war shit has got to stop.

Pay, but not benefits. Benefits have actually decreased. That was the tradeoff, more money now in cash so we don't have liabilities later. You can thank BushCo for that one.

Yes. The true cost of war is staggering.

    It begins with you.

Don't vote for either of the major parties, that's a start.

In fact, that's a "mandatory" start. Nothing else will happen until both parties have lost power and influence.

Too many veterans have a hero complex. They think the world owes them something.

    I am a vet 1964-67, army.

I don't think that military members are over-paid, but I think we glorify the military and act as though everyone who ever served is a hero. And that's just not true. My father served in the navy during WWII and the Korean War and he never made a big deal about his service or anyone else's. most of my friends fathers served in WWII and Korea, too. But they rarely spoke of it. My husband and some friends go out of their way to find out if people have served and then make a big deal about thanking them. I think it comes from over-compensating for the Vietnam War. I agree that members of the military and their families make sacrifices, but so do other government workers. And in many cases rather than thanking those other government employees, they're disparaged. Anyway, because we glorify the military it seems to make it easier to wage war.

Because third parties start better wars.

Glorifying the military goes back through the ages, back, back, back. If not for the glory factor it's doubtful there'd be any heroes. As a veteran of WWII i rarely talked about the war until much later in life when it occurred to me that veterans need to expose many things about warfare that seldom come to light. A man who'd never served once asked me if soldiers ever cried and was shocked to be told, yes, indeed, soldiers cry but never let anyone else see them if possible. That explains about the code that rules military participants. I authored a book about the underlying agonies soldiers go through oftentimes with no moral support except from, perhaps, one solitary buddy whose got problems of his own to deal with. War is not what Hollywood has pictured it as. It's a damned mess that plagues veterans forever, medals and honors notwithstanding.

Let me be the first to tell you, since no one has ever explained how the real world works (which frankly, the adults in your world were amiss for not teaching you how to think for yourself when you were a kid).

If the dopes in a third party ever dislodge one of the two big parties, then it will be made up of the former members of the one dislodged.

Now if I had to bet on one, it would be the guys closest to your way of (non) thinking: the GOP. That means, your third party is now made up of GOPers, in all but name.

And we repeat the same shit the Whigs went through.
