    Yes, but earlier in the war they were having a devastating impact on shipping.

    Records indicate that 2 out of 3 german Uboot crew members were killed so yeah your gramps made the right decision. and ugh what horrible conditions being in a uboat.. I imagine it was like living in a tiny windowless steel tube with 50 guys sharing one toilet.

    useless trivia time.. Das Boot was originally a 9 hour mini series (the longest version I saw was the 4hour 'movie' on VHS. I would like to see the mini series).

    Didn't know it by any specific name.

    Just knew it was invented, adapted, used, and it worked.

    Had at least some success, judging from old film footage...

    True, but I was still amazed at the sophistication of one for it's time, that was the only one captured, and is on display at the Chicago Museum of Science and Industry.

    There are a few others which survive and can be visited.

    One in Liverpool England, one in Kiel Germany, one in Bremerhaven Germany, in addition to the U Boat in Chicago.

    I'd like to see one of em...
