The Battle of Okinawa? (And the question really should be what was the Typhoon of Steel?

Confession - I only know about it because it features in a computer game.

yup yup.. The battle has been referred to as the "typhoon of steel" in English, and tetsu no ame ("rain of steel") or tetsu no bōfū ("violent wind of steel") in Japanese. The nicknames refer to the ferocity of the fighting, the intensity of Japanese kamikaze attacks, and the sheer numbers of Allied ships and armored vehicles that assaulted the island. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Battle_of_Okinawa

Eh? You referring to the SSI wargame from the 80s? How'd you know about that? That was waaaay before your time.

I didn't know it was from the 80s - I only read about it in an article about computer wargames. It is called Glory of Generals - Typhoon of Steel (not an SSI title), and can currently be played online on Mac (I think). But I have played some other very old computer games - none going back to DOS and the 80s though. My computer won't run DOS games - I have enough trouble trying to effectively run Windows XP software. I have found a Win98 version of the board game Diplomacy, which I have coerced into running on Win Virtual PC in XP mode.

I owned every SSI game made for the Apple II, when SSI quit making them for that platform I had to upgrade to a DOS machine, that was around 1990...
