    Tactics are obviously vital.

So is Technology, INCLUDING Military "Science/Tactics/Strategy/Etc."

Training is vital, and, that is what is behind the celebrated Warriors, such as the Spartans, Samurai, Jannisaries, Legionairs, etc.

Then, you have factors like environment, weather, etc. The Desert peoples have always had more war, because their nations are often in "land seas." Meanwhile, people in Mountains can sit up there and hold off far superior forces.

The best tactic is not to pretend that any one tactic is "the best" in any given war.

everyone knows the germans had the best tactics in world 1 and 2 before they we're eventually overpowered by the cold Russian winter, sheer weight of numbers and overwhelming U.S technological supremacy. also how did we defeat napoleon? how did the visgoths defeat the romans? the afghans defeated the russians. even the Vietnamese defeated the americans in the Vietnam war- how so u might ask? its the only logical explanation. just like some football managers are excellent tacticians on the pitch some commanders excel when it comes to tactics and in-the-moment innovations on the battlefield. lets have a little discussion about tactics, strategy, strategic ports, communications etc......

I'm very into military strategy + tactics... even as I've been pretty opposed to WAr as a political option

For the USA.. a key always was our deep ability to make weapons to have ample food + fuel. Further... our industry was BIG.. and adapted well...was out of range of attacks from Germany or Japan... while we and our allies could pond their production. We started off.. rather sloppy, and learned. Our Enemies... had major mistakes they never fixed. The Americans and Britshad long range 4 engine bombers. The Germans had medium bombers The Allies could bomb Germany.. but it only really worked once the P 51 was able to escort all the way. Then the Germans could not stop the bombing and when they tryed, the P51's destroyed them. Soon the Luftwaffe had lost planes and their best pilots. In the EAST.. the Russians started badly.. they moved industry eastward, out of range.. made zillions of T-34 tanks. Tough, cheap, durable. The German Tiger... was a big well armored beast but the Tiger was slow, very costly, mechanically unreliable. In the East... Hitler was a HUGE liability. Germany had skilled generals.. but Hitler...an arrogant fool..and a nasty paranoid.. purged many, Over-ruled the rest. The Soviets learned they could encircle large German groups...and Hitler would not allow a strategic retreat till too late. Germany often lost 10+ divisions due to such blunders...then a few weeks later.. lost 10 more the same way. The Russian winters were a nightmare for the Germans, the spring thaw ..bogged them down in muck.. the rapidly diminished Luftwaffe could not protect nor supply.....and Hitler... over and over.. made bad choices. In the West.. the Americans and British relied on the rather weak Sherman tank.... a real death trap.. BUT.. quick ,reliable, plentiful. While MANY Shermans gott destroyed, Burst into flames.. gradually, the Shermans and allied air ground down the Germans.. who were finding it harder and harder to fuel and supply their war machine. The Germans over-reached... and even had Hitler not been such a clown, they'd have still lost.

Japan... also overextended..and they misjudged the USA despite Yammamoto's warnings. Getting the reluctant USA into WWII... was bad news for both Japan and Germany. Japan had considerable forces on many scattered island. They refused to surrender...had noplace to retreat to. It was bloody attrition. As that war progressed, the USA built a bigger better Navy, better, faster planes and Japan... could not, they were losing ships, planes ,men as the Americans closed in. Soon B-29's were bombing Japan, lighting cities on fire. The Japanese were STUBBORN.. though it was a lost cause. Only after Hiroshima and Nagasaki did they accept the inevitable. BOTH Germany and Japan, wasted a lot of their forces. Both grabbed land but were so ruthless their gains came at a cost.. they needed a lot of forces to hold what they grabbed. In instances, both the Germans and Japanese had very good TACTICS... but on the bigger scale..crappy strategy.

The best tactics are to "make the other dumb son-of-a-bitch die for his country", but better yet to seriously wound your enemy to tie up medical personnel and other resources.

Also, inciting your enemies to fight each other works pretty well, another is to steal your enemy's resources and use them against them.

The Assyrians had a tactic where they torture their captured enemies to death, in this way whole villages would commit suicide rather than fall into their hands, they could destroy a town just by word of reputation.

Best of all of course is to find compromise and make peace, but that's all too often the last option on the table.

    Thx

    Best tactic...stay alive.
Next.. have the "home field advantage" (big deal in Viet Nam)
next Be PREPARED... both Napoleeon and Hitler underestimated the Russian winter.
Don't be PREDICTABLE. The Russians found they couldd encircle a BUNCH of Nazis... then wipe them out. Hitler was too stubborn + stupid to allow a retreat...in time.

Listen to the SMART GUY....Yammamoto TOLD Japan's leaders..do NOT get the Americans in this.

Good one... Generals come to power in one war.. then are outdated by the time they have command in the NEXT. WWI was BRUTAL...Generals did not GET how machine guns, barb wire, artillery CHANGED everything.

Not far into WWII.. it was evident Battleships were mostly big slow targets. In Viet Nam.. we found that you have to FIND the enemy.

There goes Bush's and the neocon strategy of fighting them in Iraq, so we don't have to fight them here.

In the first Gulf war.. that was part of why the Abrams tank wiped out t-72s with an amazing ratio. The Abrams was a BIT better in each of MANY factors....which MULTIPLIED. The Abrams could target and fire quicker..while moving faster. Had more RANGE..The Abrams had better armor, better sites, way better crews. Each advantage alone was nice but the COMBO made it totally one sided.
