A drunk moose once got stuck in an apple tree. There is hilarious videos of this on YouTube, but I didn't take the time to go grab it. Not to worry: they saved the moose.

    This isn't so surprising.
Days from now, I am still going to be laughing at this post of yours. This is all about the geometric problem of trying to display a three-dimensional surface on a two-dimensional plane. There is no perfect way to do that. EVERY method is going to have flaws. This is simply pointing out a flaw of the Mercator projection that has been understood almost from the time it was introduced. It makes Greenland look bigger than Australia, which is ridiculous. So, science is NEVER "going to settle" on the best map projection, because there AIN'T NO SUCHA THING.

That's a very interesting point, Robert. Especially when you consider that we used to think of Communism as a monolithic BLOCK, and that block included not just the Soviet Union but China as well, along with all the captive nations in Eastern Europe. The Communist bloc does indeed seem MASSIVE on the Mercator projection. The Sino-Soviet split didn't happen until 1960. All through the 1950's, America felt like we were facing a Communist threat that already controlled the great mass of EURASIA. Looked VERY menacing on a Mercator projection map of the world.

I am opposed to maps that make the Earth look bigger than it really is, or smaller than it really is.

I love nonsense sentences like that. My all-time favorite is this:

Things are more like they are now than they have ever been.

Another favorite is one I came across while once proctoring an ACT exam. One of the instructions the proctors were REQUIRED to read to the students caused me to break down giggling for about two minutes before I could recover. Here it is:

The questions shall be numbered consecutively.
    Thanks from Ian Jeffrey
