Not many know, and nobody cares...
It is certainly noticed by Native Americans. I don't think it strains any well-meaning person's tolerance if we stop insulting them with this misguided holiday.

    Banning Columbus Day

Who cares? So long as they don't ban Pancake Day.

After all, these are first hand accounts of the early voyages to the New world. Why don't we teach kids about this in school?
Ok, Spaniards are bad people. Indians are all good people. Is that your point? I hope not.

Of course that wasn't my point. My point was that the Spanish explorers that we lionize were bad people.

We all know the stories of Inca and Aztec human sacrifices. We actually DO learn about that in school. But why not learn about how the early explorers quickly became an operation to enslave and pillage all the gold they could find in the Indies? Probably because Columbus is for the US sort of the creation myth. No one wants their creation myth Adam to be a murderous pirate. But he was.

There are lot of bad stories about George Washington.

4th of July may be on the chopping block next.

Most people just want a day off to drink. No one puts this much thought into it.

No, dear. The point is, Europeans used hideous violence to steal this land.
