    My dentist's parents were from Iran. She definitely prefers being called a Persian and loves reminding me that almost every popular fruit and tree nut originated there or close by. I think the exception is pecans.

    I was sent to a boarding school for a portion of high school to, unsuccessfully, mend my recalcitrant ways, and I had an Iranian roommate. The dude was cool, and his father worked for the Shah in the oil ministry, so he had cash.

    His parents would send him boxes of pistachios, big boxes, and he'd give them to me since he claimed to be sick of them.

    Try as I might, I could never get sick of them.
