from what i can tell the nok civilization is west africas oldest as it started in 1000bc and from what i can tell it started up isolated as they where no advanced cultural influences nearby. i still dont understand why when ancient africa is potrayed on tv is always mud huts. i mean the where walled cites roads, written languages , science, universities like in ancient timbuktu. some had flags and constitutions. an some where even democratic. so why are they not mentioned. mind u these links are only from west africa they are many more in central east and southern africa

ps to add egypt was not a black civilization but nubia was. ancient egyptians where a mixture of nubians, and berbers, the only time it could have been described as a black kingdom was the time nubian kings conquered and ruled over it. present day egyptians are a result of arab, turkish, roman, and greek invaders.

You will find this hard to correct for a few reasons.



1. Virtually none of the tribes had a language and an ability to write the language that could express ideas or abstractions.



2. Political orgainzation was universally tribal, no advances in political theory. And you see this today in Africa.



3. Yes, blacks did practice slavery and did participate in the slave trade.



4. Blacks in Africa in the 1700s and 1800s were judged as savages, and that judgement is not overturned. Read Henty Stanley, even Sir Richard Burton (who was a dervish and liked less civilzed people). Cannabalism was common.



5. They didn't build anything. Building implies an ability to protect ones self and to store food for long periods, avoiding famine. The Hohokam civilization in Arizona in the 1300s built canals and farmed, had simple mud or adobe huts. But they could build permanent structures for they lacked mechanical ability. Uncivilized people are limited by their reliance on human power.

The educated classes in pre-European Africa were reading and writing in Arabic, Latin and Greek, just as their equivalents in Europe and the Middle East. I don't know too much about native sub-Saharan languages, but the idea that they couldn't express ideas or abstractions is obvious nonsense. I know two words in Swahili, one of which is the abstract 'freedom'. An article I recently read discussing various proposed (and probably wrong) origins of the word 'jazz' included the Mandingo verb 'jasi', meaning 'to become unlike oneself'. All human languages express abstract concepts and ideas.

Behind Eurasia, Africa is the largest land mass on the planet, and the whole history of pre-European colonisation is a long time. Nothing is universally anything in this history.
