Ukraine bars Russian singer from Eurovision in Kiev

Ukraine has barred Russia's Eurovision contestant because she performed in Crimea, annexed by Moscow in 2014.

Julia Samoilova was banned from entering Ukraine for three years because of her "illegal" visit, the Ukrainian SBU security service said.

Samoilova, 27, has confirmed that she sang in Crimea in 2015. Ukraine is due to host Eurovision in Kiev, in May.

The European Broadcasting Union (EBU), which founded Eurovision, said it was "deeply disappointed" by the news.

"We have to respect the local laws of the host country, however we are deeply disappointed in this decision as we feel it goes against both the spirit of the contest and the notion of inclusivity that lies at the heart of its values," it said in a statement.

The EBU said it would "continue a dialogue with the Ukrainian authorities with the aim of ensuring that all artists can perform" in Kiev.

A senior Russian politician, Frants Klintsevich, was quoted by Ria-Novosti news agency as saying Russia would boycott future Eurovision contests if the organisers failed to stand up for the singer.

The Eurovision song contest just got political. Russia and Ukraine are now locking horns over Moscow's choice of competitor.

There is already a predictable chorus of fury here. A deputy foreign minister called the ruling outrageous, cynical and inhumane - no less. One MP is demanding that the contest is moved to another country while a second warns that Russia will boycott every Eurovision to come unless organisers intervene to resolve this.

Some suspect this is precisely what Moscow wanted when it chose Julia Samoilova, knowing that she had travelled to Crimea.

Adding to the howls of outrage here is the fact that the singer being banned has used a wheelchair from childhood and this year the slogan for Eurovision is celebrating diversity.

    Julia Samoilova

This poor woman is indeed being used, exploited, by Russian authorities. They see how Ukraine only make themselves look bad, mistreating a girl in a wheelchair.

And Russia now gets to position itself as some great defender of the disabled lmao

When disabled citizens are actually treated like shit there, in daily life.

Not a single ramp in most Russian cities to help people in wheelchairs access places

Those without the strengh of arms to pull themselves and thair up and down the stairs must either stay home, under effectively house arrest, or rely on kindness of relatives, friends, or utter strangers on the street to carry them up and down

Also, only since September 2016 disabled kids in wheelchairs have been allowed into regular Russian schools, with the "normal" children

They were segregated away for decades, into "special schools". Other mentally and physically disabled children still are. And even with the wheelchair kids, their inclusion into regular schools is facing fierce resistance from parents in many regions, who don't want their own kids seeing that every day. Russians are disturbed and disgusted by disability, you know. Many are, at least. Its why Stalin had war cripples rounded up and exiled to die in Far North, after WWII, so they don't sour the mood and spoil the people's victory party, with their missing limbs and such. My grandma's brother, who lost his legs at Kursk, shot himself, rather than be sent to freeze to death out there...

But, yeah, now, Russia is a defender of the disabled... Don't make me laugh...

    And, here we go:

MOSCOW, March 22. /TASS/. The decision by the SBU, Ukraine’s intelligence agency, to ban Russia’s wheelchair-bound Eurovision contestant Yulia Samoilova from entering Ukraine is a cynical and inhuman act, Russia’s Deputy Foreign Minister Grigory Karasin told TASS.

"This is yet another openly cynical and inhuman act by the authorities in Kiev," he commented.

Earlier on Wednesday spokeswoman for Kiev’s intelligence agency, Yelena Gitlyanskaya, said Yulia Samoilova would not be allowed to visit Ukraine for three years.

MOSCOW, March 22. /TASS/. Ukrainian Security Service’s entry ban for Russia’s Eurovision contestant Yulia Samoilova is a watershed for the European community, Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova wrote on Facebook on Wednesday.

"I think it is a moment of truth for the European community: whether it will toe the line of Ukraine’s Security Service and will motivate Ukrainian radicals to conduct further ‘exploits’ … or will prove that Europe with its fundamental values, which Ukrainian politicians have been always supporting in words, is still alive," Zakharova said.

"Ukrainian Security Service’s might has been aimed at proving the postulate ‘one law for all’," she said. "This thesis has somehow worked against the Russian singer. Kiev is not going to demonstrate a principled position towards other people, including Ukrainian nationals."

The Russian diplomat reiterated that the SBU had drafted a corresponding resolution and made up excuses for restricting freedom of expression, hampering the operation of Russian media outlets in Ukraine.

"I have no idea who is standing in for master in Kiev - the SBU, president, Rada, or people sealing off entrances to banks," Zakharova said. "But someone has to make a first step towards realizing the utopian nature of current developments in that country."

Earlier on Wednesday, reports came that the SBU barred Russian singer Yulia Samoilova from entering Ukraine in the next three years. The SBU claims that performing in Crimea in the summer of 2015, Samoilova violated Ukrainian government’s resolution obliging foreigners to receive permits for visits to the Black Sea peninsula.

“In the spirit of Eurovision’s values of inclusivity,” the European Broadcasting Union has done something unprecedented: it’s offered Channel One Russia the chance to let Yulia Samoylova compete in this year's song contest live via satellite. On Wednesday, the Ukrainian authorities formally banned Samoylova from traveling to Kiev, where the next Eurovision competition will take place in May.

“This is something that has never been done before in the contest’s 60-year history,” the EBU said in a statement published online, explaining that the decision is meant to “ensure that all 43 entrants are given the opportunity to participate.”

Reacting to the EBU’s offer, Ukrainian Deputy Prime Minister Vyacheslav Kyrylenko vowed to prevent any broadcast of Samoylova’s performance on Ukrainian television, arguing on Twitter that airing her song on TV would constitute the same violation of Ukrainian law as permitting her to travel to Ukraine.
