A friend from Guanajuato said literally overnight the chick corn and corn fields tended by small farmers there were bulldozed and orchards put in by corporate interests. After they obtained total control of the water supply.

He and his dad used to work on farm equipment for the local farmers but the corps imported their own and now here he is.

No shit it's called maize, anyone NOT know that?
Corn is a stupid thing to make ethanol from. Hemp, switchgrass or any number of things that are NOT used to feed people or livestock would be far better.

It isn't a consequence of NAFTA, it is a consequence of big agri subsidies.

The last I heard the gov't was paying farmers not to grow corn. Has that changed?

It's time to quit subsidizing corn or anything else. Let the free market decide on prices. Maybe we'll quit using corn to make ethanol fuel at a net loss as well.
Actually that's my big fear. Lose the Mexican market for corn and given the strength of the farm belt voting block you will suddenly see corn ethanol percentages mandated for gasoline be increased big-time.

Fuck science, fuck economics, but keep them loyal voters happy.
Thanks from labrea and Dittohead not!

TTBOMK, yes. I'm not sure the government does that for any crops anymore. But corn is the only thing I really watch.

Its not the votes, its money as free speech.

Kinda nifty though - farmers use money to pay lobbyists, to pursued politicians to give them money, to pay more lobbyists. I guess thats what makes them job creators.
