People Here Think Trump Is a Laughingstock

    Chaos.”
    “Circus.”
“Laughingstock.” - Those were just a few of the comments I heard in Berlin this week from senior European officials trying to make sense of the meltdown in Washington at just the moment when a politically imploding President Trump embarks on what he called “my big foreign trip” in this morning’s kickoff tweet.

Many I spoke with said they had made a fundamental mistake of viewing Trump primarily as an ideologue with whom they disagreed rather than what he increasingly appears to be: an ill-prepared newcomer to the world stage, with uninformed views and a largely untested team that will now be sorely tried by a 9-day, 5-stop world tour that would be wildly ambitious even for a seasoned global leader. “People are less worried than they were six weeks ago, less afraid,” a senior German government official with extensive experience in the United States told me. “Now they see the clownish nature.” Or, as another German said on the sidelines of a meeting here devoted to taking stock of 70 years of U.S.-German relations, “People here think Trump is a laughingstock.”

The dominant reaction to Trump right now is mockery,” Jacob Heilbrunn, the editor of the conservative journal the National Interest, told the meeting at the German Foreign Office here while moderating a panel on Trump’s foreign policy that dealt heavily on the difficulty of divining an actual policy amid the spectacle. Heilbrunn, whose publication hosted Trump’s inaugural foreign policy speech in Washington during last year’s campaign, used the ‘L’ word too. “The Trump administration is becoming an international laughingstock.” Michael Werz, a German expert from the liberal U.S. think tank Center for American Progress, agreed, adding he was struck by “how rapidly the American brand is depreciating over the last 20 weeks.”

I have a feeling Germany isn't the only country to feel this way.

So awesome to have the guy in the WH be a total national embarrassment.

how do they think we feel? It's not just Trump. It's him, his supporters, and watching our government leaders in congress actually pretending things are just fine. American's cringe at the idea of him saying something stupid and causing a international incident during his foreign trip. The hope is that's the least amount of damage he does. Yup. That's where we are at now in this country. Where the US is no longer considered the leader of the free world because we elected a complete imbecile as our president.

Germans can't balance a checkbook, that is correct.. because they got rid of checks about 30 years ago.

They realized that there's a much better way of paying cashless, and embraced electronic payments as "early adopters". ( you might not know what that is, it's something very liberal, has to do with embracing change)

Trump isn't a laughing stock by any measure. He's a serious threat to the function of this democratic republic. He ignores the rule of law, discharges those who won't succumb to his egotistical whims, hires the incompetant and constantly lies to coverup his ineptitude.

    Cheers,

    Bourne

How is Germany now the in the United States?????

This is about other countries seeing BLOTUS as a laughing stock. And that's NOT a good thing.

because in the right-winge fringe universe anyone that criticizes Trump has to be a liberal.

Considering he was voted in by people who were sick and tired of being called stupid and uninformed and being mocked - I'm worried what the NEXT step is for those people.

Because I don't think "Accept the mockery and become more urbane" is going to be their gut reaction.

    Oh good lord..

Foreign officials meeting President Trump during his first overseas trip are being told to praise him for winning the Electoral College last year, the New York Times reported Friday.

Embassies and leaders who have met with Trump have been speaking among themselves and with other dignitaries about how to handle the new president, and a number of themes have emerged, the report said.

Among them are suggestions to compliment Trump on his election win, and compare him favorably to former President Obama; not to expect him to know your country's history or hot-button issues; and make a short presentation tailored to his attention span, and don't try to bring up a long list of issues. “If you were prepping people for Donald Trump, the two or three points would be one, bear in mind this is still a guy who focuses on wins,” Peter Westmacott, a former British ambassador to the U.S., told the Times.

“Secondly, he is a deal maker, a pragmatist. Third, this is a guy with a limited attention span. He absolutely won’t listen to visitors droning on for a half-hour — or longer if they need an interpreter.”
