Russia to lease Syria base 49 years

President Vladimir Putin on Wednesday signed an agreement with Syria which will give the Russian military access to an airbase on the Mediterranean for another half a century.

According to the document published on the official government website, Russia will continue to lease the Khmeimim Air Base, in the Latakia province, until at least 2066.

The Syrian government conceded to lend the base in Latakia province free of charge.

And they deployed their troops to watch over the "safe zones": Russians guard "safe zones" in Syria

Russia is expanding and entrenching their presence in Syria. They are sticking around long term.

Of course, it's their pay-off from Assad for keeping him in power.

And also keeping Iran in check... The Iranians do have their own vision there, different from the Russians. They are allies for now; but, in future, couod rival each other over the future of Syria.

On 49 years, they should have signed a real long term deal like the US did with the previous government of Cuba for GITMO.

They already said last year will use this base "indefinitely", as long as they want: Putin ratifies deal for Russia to use Syria base indefinitely | Reuters

Indeed. And, meanwhile: US tells rebels not to fight Assad
