    50%

Russia's main opposition figure thinks there's a 50 percent chance he will end up dead for speaking out against President Vladimir Putin, a fate that has befallen many of the Kremlin's enemies in recent years.

Alexei Navalny, 41, is Russia's most outspoken critic of the Putin regime, and is campaigning to challenge Putin in Russia's presidential election in 2018, even though he is officially barred from the ballot.

Correspondent Ryan Chilcote spent a week with Navalny for the second episode of "CBSN: On Assignment," ahead of mass protests in June against government corruption. Thousands of young people took to the streets in cities across Russia, with protesters marching through Moscow carrying signs that read "Navalny 2018" and chanting "Putin is a crook." More than 1,000 people were arrested, including Navalny, who spent 25 days in jail.
More: Putin critic Alexei Navalny thinks there's a 50/50 chance he'll be killed - CBS News

    That was couple days ago.

    And today:

In an interview with the Ekho Moskvy radio station on Monday, Russian opposition leader Alexei Navalny said he had been “joking” when he said in earlier comments that there was a 50 percent chance he would killed by the Russian authorities for his political activism.

In an interview with U.S. television channel CBS, which aired on Monday, Navalny was asked whether he thought he would “end up dead” for his criticism of President Putin.

“Well, like, you know, [there is a] 50 percent [chance] I would be killed or I would not be killed],” Navalny said.

The influential American TV station took him at his word and published the interview excerpt on its website on Saturday, which caused alarm among his sympathizers.

“This is a lesson for me,” Navalny told Ekho Moskvy on Monday. "Don’t joke in a foreign language."

“They took it so seriously and put it in the title, which comes across as very frightening,” he said.

The opposition leader, who plans to challenge Vladimir Putin for the Russian presidency in elections next March even though criminal convictions bar him from running, went on to caution that political activity is risky in Russia.

“Any politician in Russia, and anyone active in independent politics, faces certain risks,” Navalny said. “But to estimate those risks in percentages, or in terms of probability, is absolutely impossible.”

“It’s pointless to even think about it because you won’t be able to do anything.”

The interview with Navalny was part of the broadcast called “Enemy of the State,” which aired on CBS News on Monday.
Navalny Was 'Joking' When he Said the Kremlin Could Murder Him

Maybe he was joking. Or not. Probably 50% joking

Frankly, he is a smart man. He knows the risks of his chosen life, as he himself says.

Nobody could imagine that they (the Kremlin) would kill Boris Nemtsov. And then, in February 2015, he is shot like a fucking dog, right outside the Kremlin. Some say he was about to expose some really dirty secret Putin doesn't want to ever see the light of day... Who knows...

Point is, if he is pushed to that limit, Putin and his cohort are capable of just about anything...

And Navalny is out there pushing them, every fucking day...

It's his family I feel for, his kids

What it must be like, to have to worry that you may wake up one day, and your dad will be gone, forever...

Um.....I think if he is out there every day that its pretty safe to assume Putin isn't trying to kill him.

That every day thing kind of throws it off you know.

You know he's had dozens of critics and political challengers myrderedvright?

    Like, all the time.

You know that this man is opposing a tyrant and that he actually could be killed, right? Any day. He lives with that.

You know that, so... why do you pretend that you don't know that?

Stalin and Hitler and others didn't beat around the Bush....they just took out their political opponents.

    This doesn't make much sense.

An opposition leader without any political power (he doesn't hold any office nor does anyone he is associated with) who's very wealthy.

In a country where Putin could destroy him if he wanted, like he destroyed Mikhail Hodorkovsky who was a true and die hard anti-Putinist, this Navalny guy looks like he's thriving. Yeah, sure, he's in and out of courtroom but he is very well off. Doesn't make much sense if he is such a thorn in Putin's side.

Either the guy's a complete muppet or he is a Putin's puppet.

You've been posting news about him for years now and the only thing he seems to have managed to do is shout slogans against Putin on the streets of Moscow with dwindling support as years go by.
    Thanks from The Man
