    Russia Presidential Election 2018

Russian journalist and socialite Ksenia Sobchak announced on Wednesday she will run in presidential elections next year.

Sobchak made the announcement Wednesday on a special episode of her “Sobchak Live” show on opposition-leaning Dozhd TV news channel.

The former reality television host is the daughter of Anatoly Sobchak, the first democratically elected mayor of St. Petersburg and the former boss of President Vladimir Putin.

She also sent a letter to the daily Vedomosti news site outlining her reasons for running against Putin, who is expected to confirm his candidacy at the Valdai conference Oct. 19, where the Kremlin said he will make “an important announcement.”

Sobchak said elections in which prominent opposition leader Alexei Navalny — barred from running over fraud convictions — was not allowed to participate should not be boycotted.

"By rejecting the legal and safe but still significant manifestation of our will as participants in controlled, imperfect, even dishonest elections, we do not leave ourselves any out except street resistance,” said Sobchak, adding that protests were not for everyone.

History shows that even elections controlled by authoritarian governments "turned into reasons and instruments for authentic democratic changes,” she said.

"This always occurred when the opposition took part in elections, and never with its silent non-participation," she added.

Sobchak’s name first surfaced last month when a Kremlin source said she would be an “ideal” candidate to challenge Vladimir Putin in the March 18, 2018, vote.

Sobchak then did not deny her potential candidacy in a recent interview with the Russian edition of U.S. fashion magazine Glamour. Sobchak's presidential ambitions have been well-known, with her friends saying she opted to run in earnest after initially considering it as a part of a political show.

The New Times news website preempted her announcement by several hours, citing sources as saying that Sobchak will act as a spoiler candidate for the liberal vote.

In exchange for running the spoiler campaign, the news website wrote that Sobchak would be offered to return to state-controlled television or even take the helm at Kremlin-funded RT.

It is widely reported that Sobchak had been effectively banned from appearing on federal channels after her participation in 2011-2012 anti-government protests.

Her campaign will be staffed by liberal politicians, strategists, experts and journalists, including former and current Dozhd TV colleagues, according to The New Times.

The Bell outlet cited two sources as saying that Vitaly Shkliarov, a political consultant who worked on the Bernie Sanders campaign in the 2016 U.S. presidential race will work on Sobchak’s campaign.

Shkliarov recently helped two opposition politicians gain an unprecedented number of seats in the Moscow municipal elections.
Socialite Ksenia Sobchak Announces Bid for Russian Presidency

Little Ksenia in the 90s, with her father, Putin's beloved mentor back then, Anatoly Sobchak, Governor of St. Petersburg, not sure about "democratically elected", but he was corrupt and mobbed up as hell, and Putin, reportedly, was his trusted liaison with the local mafia

The other man, their loyal bodyguard, ex-KGB officer Viktor Zolotov, later followed Putin to Moscow, became the head of his security as President, and now carries the rank of General and commands the new Russian National Guard, Rosgvardia lol Nice, eh?

Sobchak, Zolotov at his side as always, and Putin lurking like a snake in the background there

2000, Ksenia and her mom, Lyudmila Narusova, who is a senator for St. Petersburg, still to this day, with Putin at Governor Sobchak's funeral

Since 2004, she hosted this idiotic reality show: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dom-2

It's most known for drunkenness and mayhem on set, fights

as well as lewdness and, yes, sex, on camera

The most shameless show on Russian TV. Older Soviet-raised generations were and are disgusted by it. But it is popular among younger folks...

For a long time, Sobchak was just a glamorous rich girl co-host of Dom 2

That's all she was known as.

But later, she started dating the well known Opposition activist Ilya Yashin (middle)

That's when she first got involved in politics, started going to protest rallies.

Her relationship with Yashin didn't work out, though they remain good friends.

She has got more involved in liberal Opposition politics, even took part in their 2013 Valday Forum

She has made efforts to remake herself so that people take her more seriously as a potential political figure.

She has been hosting a political talk show on the pro-Opposition TV channel (the only such channel in Russia and only accessible online there) Dozhd

Her biggest bargaining chip is her unique position, with her powerful mother

and her close family connections to Putin himself, on one side; and her personal ties to the Opposition, through Yashin and others; she sought to setve as a sort of bridge between the two groups... I am not sure how successful she's been with this though.

She recently met with Putin, ahead of her announcement: Ksenia Sobchak: 'Russia's Paris Hilton' to challenge Vladimir Putin for presidency but risks splitting opposition

lol She really is Russia's Paris Hilton. Moreover, she met the actual Paris Hilton when that one came to Moscow back in 2011

And now, she is the first woman to go for Prez...

    Should be interesting indeed...

This announcement was a long time rumoured, so Alexei Navalny made his views clear last month shortly before his latest arrest.

The anti-corruption blogger dismissed Ksenia Sobchak as a Kremlin stooge, a "liberal laughing stock" and an opposition "caricature", brought in to lend legitimacy to a sham vote. He scorned her as a showbiz celebrity, only seeking more social media "likes" and followers.

Ms Sobchak herself denies she is a spoiler, saying she will step down if Mr Navalny himself is allowed to run for president. That scenario looks highly improbable though.

So the socialite-turned-journalist has promised to be a "loud speaker" for those fed up with the lies, theft and corruption of their leaders. It is language that she borrows quite heavily from Mr Navalny.

She would be the first woman candidate in 14 years, a point which her campaign video in a kitchen underscores. But Ms Sobchak also has the "Marmite" effect: she is as unpalatable to as many people as she attracts.

And crucially, it's not clear how far she'd actually go in criticising Vladimir Putin himself, a close family friend since her childhood.

It has been rumored, though never confirmed, that Sobchak is Putin's goddaughter.
Russia gets a new candidate for president. Is she serious?

Personally, I always thought she was just playing at "Oppositioner" lol

A political consultant who worked on Bernie Sanders' U.S. presidential campaign in 2016 is slated to aid Russian opposition candidate Ksenia Sobchak’s presidential bid in March 2018 elections.

Socialite and former reality television host Sobchak announced her run for the Russian presidency on her television show on the opposition-leaning Dozhd TV network on Wednesday.

The Bell news outlet cited two sources as saying that Vitaly Shkliarov, a political consultant who worked on the Bernie Sanders campaign in the 2016 U.S. presidential race will work on Sobchak’s campaign.

Shkliarov, 41, has previously worked on campaigns to elect German Chancellor Angela Merkel and President Barack Obama before taking a job with Sanders.

The Belarusian-born consultant helped two opposition politicians gain an unprecedented number of seats in the Moscow municipal elections in September.

Former member of the State Duma Dmitry Gudkov and former municipal council member Maxim Katz organized the United Democrats coalition to help their proteges win seats in the municipal elections.
Sanders Campaign Aide to Work on Sobchak's Presidential Bid

Russian journalist and socialite Ksenia Sobchak, who announced her bid for the Russian presidency on Wednesday, will need to raise more than $17 million for her campaign, The Bell news outlet reported Wednesday.

Nicknamed “Russia’s Paris Hilton,” Sobchak is considered a spoiler candidate for the liberal opposition vote. The former reality television host is the daughter of Anatoly Sobchak, the first democratically elected mayor of St. Petersburg and the former boss of President Vladimir Putin.

Sobchak’s 2018 presidential run could cost up to 1 billion rubles ($17.4 million), The Bell cited a source close to her campaign headquarters as saying on Wednesday.

But an unnamed businessman acquainted with Sobchak and a government-linked source told the outlet that financing her presidential ambitions shouldn’t be difficult.

They say that big business will fund the majority of Sobchak’s $17.4 million campaign, as is common for candidates backed by the Kremlin.

Sobchak said she has “not yet evaluated a specific amount” she would need to bankroll her presidential bid. “But I’m already talking to a large number of businessmen who are willing to provide initial financing,” Sobchak told the opposition Dozhd TV news channel where she works.

The Bell cites Sobchak’s friends as saying that she may have asked Russian tycoons Mikhail Fridman and Mikhail Prokhorov for funding, a claim that sources close to the two billionaires deny.

On her “none of the above” campaign website and an announcement letter sent to the Vedomosti daily, Sobchak said she planned to form fundraising teams in the near future.

Why Ksenia Sobchak Is Running for President (Op-ed)

As far as campaign financing, I can see the cinema industry getting involved.

Ksenia, after all, is married to the actor Maksim Vitorgan, the son of Emmanuel Vitorgan, one of the most famous Soviet and Russian movie stars

They had a son, Platon, in late 2016.

The Vitorgan family holds a lot of sway in Russian cinema. Emmanuel is a huge figure.

I think he and Lyudmila like each other too lol

Former TV personality and socialite Kseniya Sobchak described the Republic of Crimea as “Ukrainian territory” in her first press conference as a candidate in next year’s presidential election.

She also claimed that Crimea’s accession to the Russian Federation in 2014 was a violation of the Budapest Memorandum on Security Assurances, which bound signatories to respect the territorial integrity of Ukraine.

“From the point of international law, Crimea is Ukrainian. Period. Let us move on with our conversation,” Sobchak said on Tuesday, according to RIA Novosti.

Sobchak acknowledged that there were many ethnic Russians living in the Republic and that the overwhelming majority of its population supported reunification with Russia in 2014. Nonetheless, she still saw the reunification as a violation of the 1994 Budapest Memorandum.

“Not as a politician, but as a woman, as Kseniya Sobchak, I can say that right now the most important thing for Russia and Ukraine is to restore friendship at any cost. Period,” she added.

The former journalist’s comments on Crimea contrast with previous statements that she has made on the subject. She told the Polish edition of Newsweek in March 2015: “Today, the discussion over Crimea is already closed. Crimea is a part of Russia and any further discussion whether it should be returned or not makes no sense.”
‘Crimea is Ukrainian territory’ – It girl-turned-presidential candidate Sobchak outlines her program

I figured as much: she has no intention of winning the election. She is in it to draw away some pro-Opposition votes; while the big majority of people, one may like it or not, support both Putin and the retaking of Crimea (and despise Ukraine, like many Ukrainians now despise Russia) and will gladly reelect him.

    Meanwhile:

In her first press conference since announcing her bid for the presidency, Ksenia Sobchak on Tuesday said Igor Malashenko, who once helped Boris Yeltsin to the presidency, would be joining her campaign team.

Sobchak unexpectedly announced last week she would run in presidential elections in March next year. Although President Vladimir Putin has not yet made his candidacy official, he is expected to run and win.

With Russia’s prominent opposition politician Alexei Navalny barred from running, Sobchak has been dismissed by some observers as a “spoiler candidate,” meant to distract attention.

Speaking to journalists at a packed theater in central Moscow on Tuesday, Sobchak, whose earlier career in reality television has won her the nickname of Russia's Paris Hilton, was defiant about her role in the elections.

"You can laugh at me, but I understand show business," she told journalists. "My job is to rewrite the rules of the show — to bring a new face to the show."

Addressing concerns that she is not a real opposition candidate — with Sobchak’s father once having acted as Putin’s mentor — she said: "I believe that I will help bring people to the elections against everyone — and against Vladimir Putin."

"Of course for some Putin is a tyrant and dictator. Others consider him Russia's saviour. But I’m in a difficult position, Putin helped my dad — and practically saved his life."

"I am against the fact that any person, including Putin, should be in power for 18 years,” she added.

The biggest news to come out of the press conference —which her critics have dismissed as the kickoff to her race which will be more show than substance — was the announcement that Igor Malashenko would lead her campaign.

Malashenko was president of NTV, an independent television channel by a group of leading television journalists, until joining Yeltsin's campaign team to engineer Boris Yeltsin’s presidential victory in 1996.

Speaking at the event, Malashenko said he did not support Sobchak’s pledge to drop out if Navalny is registered as a candidate.

But Sobchak gave her word to support Navalny if he is allowed into the race, despite a criminal record in a case his supporters say is politically motivated.

On Crimea, the peninsula annexed by Russia from Ukraine in March 2014, Sobchak said: “according to international law, Crimea is Ukraine's. Period."

Meanwhile, in Crimea, a cool pic I came across, local fishermen in a tiny boat check their nets right next to the huge new bridge being built to the mainland

Just... The most Russian photo ever. That's how it is there, no matter what's happening, regular folks just go on with their normal lives, as they always have lol

lol Nah. She is Putin's God daughter. She has his permission for this little stint, which is probably part of his own plan anyway. Nobody will kill her.

Well the problem there is that there's been big talk that anyone who opposes Putin suddenly disappears. I wonder if there's any truth to that? Time will tell.

Not someone who is basically family to him, surely...

Then again, her dad's death is itself murky as hell... Anatoly Sobchak died suddenly, in Kaliningrad, during a visit where he was supporting Putin's Presidential campaign...

There are those who say old man Sobchak knew too damn much about Putin's past, especially what he did for him back in St. Petersburg in the 90s, that Putin and his ex-KGB friends decided it was best to help him along to the afterlife...

In 2004, a famous St. Petersburg mob boss also died suddenly, and in great agony, poisoned by Polonium (two years before Litvinenko). He too knew Putin back in Petersburg, and remembered things about him Putin would not have wanted shared in public...

Ksenia, of course, was just a little girl, back then, when her dad was Governor, and Putin, reportedly, his middleman with the city's powerful organized crime networks. She wouldn't have known or understood much of it.

But, if Putin did have her father actually killed... Maybe she is holding grudge... Who knows...
