Saudi Arabia's Night of Long Knives

The inside story of the Saudi night of long knives | Asia Times NOVEMBER 6, 2017

The House of Saud’s King Salman devises an high-powered “anti-corruption” commission and appoints his son, Crown Prince Mohammad Bin Salman, a.k.a. MBS, as chairman.

Right on cue, the commission detains 11 House of Saud princes, four current ministers and dozens of former princes/cabinet secretaries – all charged with corruption. Hefty bank accounts are frozen, private jets are grounded. The high-profile accused lot is “jailed” at the Riyadh Ritz-Carlton.

A top Middle East business/investment source who has been doing deals for decades with the opaque House of Saud offers much-needed perspective: “This is more serious than it appears. The arrest of the two sons of previous King Abdullah, Princes Miteb and Turki, was a fatal mistake. This now endangers the King himself. It was only the regard for the King that protected MBS. There are many left in the army against MBS and they are enraged at the arrest of their commanders.”

Daaang.. so the SA King's young son, Prince MBS, now controls vast swaths of the SA government. It's gonna be interesting what kind of king MBS will be when he takes power.. if he survives the next few years.

This is actually an event that is interesting, and I'm keen to see how this develops over the next few weeks. So, a son is destroying his rivals for the throne through abuse of his position-hmm....a deadly game for him as well.

Very interesting indeed.. in a Game of Thrones way. Prince MBS seems to be a young moderate with liberal ideas in a country thats very conservative with very old people controlling its power structure. Best of luck to him if he does intend to bring SA into the modern world but odds are he won't survive.

MBS pulled another rabbit from his hat swearing the future of Saudi Arabia is a matter of “simply reverting to what we followed – a moderate Islam open to the world and all religions.”

In a nutshell: a state that happens to be the private property of a royal family inimical to all principles of freedom of expression and religion, as well as the ideological matrix of all forms of Salafi-jihadism simply cannot metastasize into a “moderate” state just because MBS says so.

And to think...this is how Jared Kushner is going to bring about peace in the Middle East.

It was probably no accident that last month, Jared Kushner, Trump’s senior adviser and son-in-law, made a personal visit to Riyadh. The two princes are said to have stayed up until nearly 4 a.m. several nights, swapping stories and planning strategy.

The kingdom's old guard probably won't like that the USA is again getting involved with internal SA politics so thats not gonna help Prince MBS hold on to power in SA.

Did Jared just secure his family's real estate empire by facilitating a palace coup in Saudi Arabia?

Yeah Prince Kushner meeting with Prince MBS right before the purge is horrible optics. Middle Eastern media is already full of rumors; Kush gave MBS intel that a coup was imminent, Kush accepted $58m in bribes for trump to push for Aramco IPO in Wall Street, Israeli military jets in SA to support MBS incase the old guard puts up a fight, etc etc.

This US involvement with SA internal politics could easily blow up and the world end up with an even more radical SA regime or war with Iran.
