Putin bans "Jaguar" (not cars lol)

    The drink: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jaguar_(beverage)

He apparently just signed a decree, both production and distribution of such beverages will be banned since the start of 2018.

Lots of people have called for this.

Jaguar is the drink of the Russian youth, and older people widely accuse it of turning said youth into morons

    lol

And deliquents on top of that

    And girls drink it too

"And then, we wonder why we have too many retards and such defectives born in our country..." in the words of one well known columnist over there lol

It is an alcoholic beverage, 8%

Still, considered WEAK alcoholic beverage, which is why it has been freely sold to underage kids...

"Generation Jaguar" is how some older folks there refer derisively to the young

Because, I suppose, it would be better if they sat around shooting vodka, like their elders? haha

I guess that old election strategy of “only old people turn out to vote” is universal.

I think it's stupid to ban it outright. He could've made it tougher for kids to get their hands on this stuff.

I looked up the ingredients for Jaguar Original. You can look at the enhanced backside of the can here if interested.

Wow! Mate extract, which is a very powerful tea from Paraguay, and it doesn't say how strong the extract is; Taurin, Caffeine, sugar, some colourings, probably the worst kind of vodka for the alcohol content, and... Jaguar Vitamins... which not even God knows what they are.

I understand the ban. I just think it won't do much good without a viable alternative which is less damaging. Making this kind of beverage more expensive through disproportionate taxation would've been a better option in my opinion.

I went to their website and started laughing when reading their "About us" section.
    JAGUAR - Jaguar - ??????? ???????? ??????? ?? ??????????

It looks to me like it is the other way around - moronic youth turn to it for entertainment.

Well, on a scale of 1 to 10 my opinion of the youth in Russia just went down about 8 pts.

    Very true

But, we shall see what effect this has.

Navalny, the Oppositioner, has a lot of youth support

In fact, it's mostly the young who turn out to listen to him around the country

and mainly the young, who face riot police at his protests

Navalny does make Putin nervous, because of this, that's why the Kremlin does what they have to do, even arrest him periodically

to keep him out of the Presidential race and all that.

That said, even among the young, Navalny supporters are in minority

"Putin is Russia", that's what the girl on the left's poster says... Two thirds of young Russians eligible to vote intend to vote for Putin, according to a survey just in December: https://ria.ru/society/20171207/1510383044.html

Time will tell if losing their favorite drink might turn more youth against the Kremlin... lol

I don't agree with most bans on most things. It typically tends to be knee jerk overreactions. But, that is how Russian governments always did things, unfortunately...

    Yep, pretty much.

You are entitled to that opinion.

Well, I have recently seen a Russian documentary that claimed mixing alcohol with soda, with any beverages with bubbles, with gas, can kill brain cells and eventually cause deterioration of brain abilities, literally, make you stupid. And Jaguar is basically that...

What is the legal age to drink alcohol in Russia? We have sodas that contain alcohol, but you have to be 21 to purchase it. I am so sure about the carbonation in booze and brain cells. We have many mixed drinks that you can order with soda, such as a rum and coke, 7 & 7, Jack and Coke, etc. Does the problem stem from selling booze to underage kids...or the beverage itself?

    Thanks from The Man

    You have to be 18

and in many regions, they ban alcohol sales in late June, to prevent high school grads from getting wasted and starting mayhem (and also ban sales of any drinks in glass bottles, which drunk boys can and do, unfortunately, use as weapons in brawls, break them on one end and stab each other; and also throw them at buildings and such)

You have to show your passport to prove your proper age

Driver license is not considered legitimate ID over there, as Russia is awash in fake driver licenses (which is another reason so many people died on the roads there...)

Plenty of stores don't give a shit and break the law and sell to minors regardless

The Young Guards, the youth group of Putin's United Russia party, does regular raids on stores in various regions

They send in undercover youths to try to buy alcohol (and cigarettes) from stores, and then punish those stores that fall for it, put stickers on them that they break the law and sell shit to minors

and call police on them; sometimes force them to shut down entirely.

Not sure how much it helps... As the experience of the 80s Dry Law under Gorbachev over there shows, the more you try to ban booze, the more people will turn to worse, illegal, underground shit...

As to the science, I am not sure. Honestly, all the proof I have seen so far, are claims by older Russians today that the younger ones are much more idiotic than they were at that age lol Which, I am sure, their own elders back then said about them

Funny how JAGUAR LITE has the same colors in their logo and even similar fonts to the NFL Jaguars team, paws and all.
