    Putin grants himself new powers

Putin addresses the Duma, Russia's impotent joke of a "parliament"

Both the Duma and the other, equally eviscerated chamber, the Federation Council, the Russian senate, just happily, unanimously rubber stumped broad new powers for Putin.

I will try to find an article in English on this later.

But, basically, Putin just got the power to overrule and override the Civil Code at his pleasure. Among other things, he can now personally assign "exemptions" from commerce, sanctions, tax, and other legislation to any company he chooses. In other words, companies and oligarchs who own them can be arbitrarily declared, essentially, to function above the law, simply because Putin says so.

Of course, this is, supposedly, only for "special situations". Except we have no idea what defines such a "special situation". Clearly that too mean "whenever Putin feels like it"...

    God bless Russia...

Any reflection on the alleged American sanctions that we passed unanimously and Trump took forever to sign into law (if he ever did?)

It looks like as of March, he was still refusing to do so.

    Asshole.

Yeah, they made a counter-sanctions law; and are also making one that will punish Russians, citizens and entities, who comply with the foreign sanctions, for example, by refusing services to people from Crimea. There are some major banks and such, with big assets in the West, who fear being caught in the crossfire here, and it is really them who had asked Putin to grant them exemptions from all these new rules, which is what the above is about, I believe.

Still, a slippery slope. As one Russian article I saw said in it's title, he is now openly granting himself "Tsar-like" powers...
