FAIR: The Cost of Immigration

$113 billion per year may be found in our publication The Fiscal Burden of Illegal Immigration on United States Taxpayers.

While the cost of taking care of poor immigrants may be shifted by legislation among the levels of government and the private sector, the fact remains that immigration creates an enormous fiscal burden on America and its citizens—a burden that Congress has levied upon us through short-sighted and haphazard immigration policy.

Interesting article.

"Education for the children of illegal aliens constitutes the single largest cost to taxpayers, at an annual price tag of nearly $52 billion. Nearly all of those costs are absorbed by state and local governments."

The problem is that schools are fixed cost institutions. These studies confuse the average cost of educating one child with the marginal cost of educating an additional one.

Not to mention that those children will have parents residing, illegally or otherwise in the community, and paying rent and property tax as a pass through expense.

There are 'good' immigrants and there are 'bad' immigrants, there is no question about that, but by and large the United States benefits greatly from immigration. I'll take virtually ANY able bodied person 18 years of age or younger. If rearing children through the education system didn't create benefits for society we wouldn't do it for our own children, but it does, and this immigration is one of the brighter spots on our otherwise bleak economic future. Even with the immigrants we face a demographic Title XIX crisis which will be mitigated at least somewhat by the fact that the United States still has a growing population. Other industrialized countries, have a greater problem here (Japan and Germany come immediately to mind)
