Aleksandr Khoroshavin, Governor of Russia's Sakhalin oblast, in his high and mighty days

He was recently arrested by the FSB for corruption on a massive scale. Just one bribe among those he is accused of taking is estimated at $5.5 million US dollars! A billion (!) rubles in cash was found in his apartment.

He was taken down somewhat dramatically, right on board his business class flight back from Moscow, FSB operatives disarmed his two bodyguards and detained the Governor.

Khoroshavin, on the plane, handcuffed to his seat

They even let the bastard finish his nice meal, that was bloody kind of them...

Khoroshavin, wearing a hood to shield himself from the media, escorted into court by a masked FSB agent

But now, the most scandalous and offensive part. Aside from huge piles of cash, investigators searching the Governor's apartment, office, and luxurious mansion discovered a number of extravagant items.

One is a golden, diamond encrusted pen handcrafted in Italy and worth some 36 million rubles or half a million US greens

The body of the pen is made of gold and platinum and encrusted in black diamonds: 1,113 diamonds on the pen itself, another 945 diamonds on the cap.

? ??????????? ?????????? ????? ????? ?? 36 ?????????

Nuts... Fucking Governors living like Saudi princes. And this guy is just one example. Make no mistake, it's not the bribes he was brought down for, he just fell out of favor in Moscow. If you get along with the Kremlin, you can steal at your pleasure.

Though, this is a puzzle to me. Where would he even steal so much money. This isn't Tyumen with its oil, or Magadan with its vast natural gold reserves or Kemerovo with its coal mines. Sakhalin is just a bunch of cold North Pacific islands (Sakhalin itself and the Kuril chain). There is nothing there, but struggling, impoverished fishing villages. New fish processing plants have opened in recent years, Putin has been pushing to invest in the region. But economic prosperity is very, very far over there, and so, I would, assume, are prospects for graft. Unless this scumbag was siphoning off from the Federal aid funds which are supposed to build new schools and other critical infrastructure in those aforementioned villages on the islands. In which case he is indeed a despicable piece of shit and I will only cheer for what they will do to him.

But there are five dozen like him that lord over Russia :( Probably all with their diamond pens too.

I could be a trillionaire, and would still feel like a complete jerk if I had a $500,000 pen.
Me neither. I think these guys just suddenly have all this money and don't know how to even spend it, they just have so much of it and there's no real culture or etiquette of being rich in Russia, except that you must show it off. Wives and girlfriends of rich Russians are known in Turkey and Europe for showing up on beaches in bikinis yet covered by huge diamonds all over, rings on every fingers, earrings, necklaces, bracelets, fucking ankle bracelets with diamonds in them. Tasteless and crazy. But, that's Russia.

Will it ever get better, do you think?
Not as long as Putin remains in charge, that's for sure. He likes this feudal system of the big Tsar, himself, ruling over a bunch if dirty, corrupt vassal Tsarki (Little Tsars) with their fiefdom territories and their serf peasants. Any Tsaryok who steps out of line can be easily brought down: there is something nasty available against each and every one, that's the point, that's how they are picked, the system is designed to weed out honest, honorable, CLEAN people, and promote criminal thugs with hands dripping with blood... How such a system would ever be stopped, I don't know. Putin built it, but I don't think even he knows how to stop it anymore, just goes along with it, at this point. Perhaps, one day, it will all blow up, a Russian Maidan. That would be bad. I mean, the bloodletting in Ukraine right now would be a tear drop to a sea compared to the carnage of a new Russian Civil War. In the last one, in 1917, at least there were no huge stockpiles of nuclear, chemical, and biological weapons that all kinds of violent extremist groups could get their hands on. I seriously hope the West has a plan for when the shit finally hits the fan over there...

The pen is worthless. It's all the jewels attached to it that are worth $500K
Yes, of course. But the gold, platinum and diamond body is a part of the pen :smiley-shrug:
