Those were some of the gruesome details in a 56-page report on the Alabama prison system that was issued by the Justice Department on Wednesday. The report, one of the first major civil rights investigations by the department to be released under President Trump, uncovered shocking conditions in the state’s massively overcrowded and understaffed facilities.

Prisoners in the Alabama system endured some of the highest rates of homicide and rape in the country, the Justice Department found, and officials showed a “flagrant disregard” for their right to be free from excessive and cruel punishment. The investigation began in the waning days of the Obama administration and continued for more than two years after Mr. Trump took office.

One prisoner had been dead for so long that when he was discovered lying face down, his face was flattened. Another was tied up and tortured for two days while no one noticed. Bloody inmates screamed for help from cells whose doors did not lock.

kudos to the DOJ on this one. Nicely done. These stories are almost too gruesome to believe.

I’m not shocked. We don’t deal with the criminal violence on the streets. How would we even remotely deal with it in the prison system? Between organized crime and such?

Let’s start at the bottom.

1) Who wants to become a prison guard?
2) Who BECOMES a prison guard?
3) Who STAYS a guard?
4) Who becomes a prisoner?

You could be living in Brunei.

We need to be honest about why we face what we do.
It seems there are degrees of shit holeness. We are supposed to be one of the "first world nations", our standards need to be much higher than Brunei's, we need to be measured against our peer nations. How does Alabama's prison system compare to say, Switzerland's or France's, or even Germany's?

We could always compare who goes to prison in Alabama Switzerland France or Germany.

But remember prison guards are bad guys too. They should only be paid 28,000 a year to be basically human garbage men.

fun fact: brunei's incarceration rate is 138 per 100,000, while the US's rate is 655 per 100,000.

I mean I'm being tricky, because the US has the highest incarceration rate in the world, but El Salvador and Cuba--actual card-carrying shithole countries according to our fuhrer--give us a run for our money.

Does that number included in jail? Or is that prison only?
