Don't be absurd. It's part of an ambassador's job to send reports back to the government. Rest assured that the US ambassador in the UK is keeping the US government up to date with all the details of Brexit, including the way the senior politicians are acting, as well as all the details of the campaign to replace Theresa May as PM. That's his job, it isn't spying. Plus, what did Sir Kim say that everybody doesn't already know?
Well to be fair, that would be everybody except jenniel.

Leaks are damaging but the ambassador's dumb opinion hardly reaches the level of national security. All it did is cause embarrassment to the country of Britain.
The ambassador is one of the most highly regarded diplomats in the UK or he wouldn't have been assigned to the most important diplomatic posts. His opinions are not dumb. His job is to show the British government how they have to act and react to the leaders of a foreign government, in this case the US. He did just that, which is why the British government backed him.
What was embarrassing to the British government is that somebody they felt deserved trust didn't live up to that standard.
What is embarrassing to the US is Ambassador Darroch is 100% correct in his assessment and Trump proved it by announcing that our government would never talk to Darroch again, because he got his widdle fee-fees hurt.

Diplomatic cables are internationally sacrosanct. Of all the people who go through airports and other customs depots, only those in possession of a diplomatic passport are allowed to go through without any questions, stops or checks whatsoever. Nobody interferes with this, not even in nations which are known for international misbehavior, because of the consequences and outrage that would ensue.

Darroch was sent to the U.S. to do a job, by all outward appearances he has been doing that job well and in a way that effectively engaged with the White House. Trump aides and staffers have been known to frequent the British Embassy; the recent royal baby party in particular has been reported to have drawn pretty much everyone of note in the White House, save the president himself.

You have to be so deep in the tank for Trump that you wouldn't know you're drowing to consider Darroch's assessment of affairs in Washington be "embarrassing" entirely on its own ... for the Brits. The former French ambassador has already come out to say that everything Darroch said is known to be true throughout the D.C. diplomatic corps. Hell, if I could guess, I'd wager you haven't even read Darroch's comments, you've just decided they're bad because someone in right-wing media told you they are.

He did his job, and for that someone in the UK betrayed him, betrayed British law and betrayed the time-honored principles of international diplomacy. It's like recording an attorney's conversation with their client and publishing it for all to see; both illegal in every respect and devoid of ethics, the kind of thing that undermines modern civilization just in the doing of it. If this is OK, everything is OK.

Whoever did this is scum, and you're over here cheering them on.

But he got his way. Boris Johnson caved, Sir Kim Darroch resigned, and Theresa May once again comes across as irrelevant. As long as Trump's behavior keeps being reinforced, he's going to see it as strong.
It is a short sighted "Victory" for Trump. He is rid of an ambassador who is one the top British diplomat and a man of influence who just reported to his government what is obvious about the present administration in the US. But what will be next ? More intervention in British private business destroying a bit more trust ? Other countries will consider that the USA do not need allies but vassals in a time when your country is loosing ground in terms of global influence. It creates room for other powers like Russia and China to undermine the world order opening ways to more uncertainity. The USA cannot hope to frame alone the future of Western nations and needs to use soft power to remain the unchallenged Superpower before the rise of China. And Trump is doing exactly the contrary learning nothing from the past failures of military adventures made by his predecessors in the Near or Middle East and letting China filling the vacuum created by the lack of global vision of the Trump Administration. What happened with this ambassador is perhaps a detail but trying to get away from what traditional diplomacy may structure in terms of relations among nations cannot only lead to destroy a very much needed interaction among countries need to build over and over common aims.
