Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, D-N.Y., filed legislation on Friday to make it easier for researchers to study the therapeutic and medical benefits of certain psychedelic drugs such as magic mushrooms amid a growing national shift in attitudes toward the substances.

In an amendment to a large-scale appropriations bill, Ocasio-Cortez wants to end the rider that prohibits federal money being spent on "any activity that promotes the legalization of any drug or other substance in Schedule I" of the Controlled Substances Act.

"Academics and scientists report that provisions like this create [stigma] and insurmountable logistical hurdles to researching Schedule I drugs," her summary states.

What could go wrong here?

Magic Mushrooms seem to have done wonders for AOC.

There’s some building evidence that controlled doses of these things or their derivatives are triggering significant improvements in certain conditions (medical, neurological and psychiatric) which have not responded to traditional/standard approaches.

Think of it like electro convulsive treatment. It’s not done on anyone and everyone. It’s done when the most common effective treatments haven’t worked for some people and they are persistently suffering and running out of options/recommendations. It’s basically for people where things are so chronically bad and functioning so poor that the risk of adverse effect from the treatment making things any worse is low. If AOC or any other political opponent were advocating studying ECT, you could act like she were wanting to electrocute her political enemies, but that would be dishonest partisan hackery.

You don’t have to fabricate a reason to oppose whatever any political opponent happens to be saying. Even broken clocks are right twice a day.

I don't have a problem with studying Scheduled 1 Drugs.

I don't think we should use Federal Funds to do so.

But, AOC is a Socialist.

She believes the Federal Government will never run out of other people's money.

This sounds kind of like a dishonest pivot. In post 1 you quipped “what could go wrong here?” What was meant by that, if your only gripe is funding source?

If federal funds weren’t/don’t go toward this research, private funds would/will, and we know that Pharma’s investments are recovered by what they charge to insurance companies and government payers, which is “other people’s money” all the same.

So maybe there’s debate about whether public or private dollars are better for funding pharmaceutical research, but that debate could have been started regarding any and all pharmaceuticals in general, not as a swipe at AOC by singling our psychadelics/hallucinogenics.

Not true, weed and weed derivatives were schedule one and considered pharmaceuticals in some if not all states.

You don't know anything about hallucinogens. As Neo points out, psychedelics have tremendous potential. AOC is correct to want to make studies easier, but it's nice of you to continue allowing her to live rent free up there in your belfry ;)

Having them on schedule one is ridiculous to begin with. Anyone who has ever done shrooms would laugh at the suggestion they have a "high potential for abuse". They are pretty damn self limiting.

Wrong. This looks more like LSD. AOC thought LSD was a Gov't policy Put it in her Kool-Aid. Freaked out at her Garbage Disposal.
