Thanksgiving is a bigoted holiday that discriminates against the grumpy and jaded.

They've been creeping in this direction for a while. As long as they pay double-time to the employees who hopefully are working on a voluntary basis I have no problem with it. When I worked at MC years ago I worked on Christmas 'cuz it was so lucrative and I don't really like holidays that much.

One of the paradoxes for progressives like me is all the Thomas Friedman "world is flat" thinking that in some ways means people have to work longer and longer to be "globally competitive." Even if I'm willing to work 60 hours a week, there are several million in India who are compelled to work 23/7 and they've been staffing call centers for freaked out American parents on Christmas morning for years. I guess this kind of thinking assumes an attitude of "capitalism is good for countries, it must be good for the world." I accept that capitalism can work, but I think we need a modicum of humanism and, yes, socialism, to ensure that we don't go feudal.

I suppose the other side of this is that in a more global economy it's quaint to assume that our "local" traditions will survive as we once knew them.

And, I guess that for Americans who work six days a week, having another day to do their shopping is a "nice gesture" by Sears.

Myself, I'll be going here tomorrow...

Dave you are so retro in a Jimmy Stewart meets Flock of Seagulls kind of way! I heard a term the other day that made me think of you ... retrosexual.

Anyone who has got a liking and embraces classic pop culture. This can be a various formats of like from sixties television to eighties music, there is no need to limit yourself to one decade just as long you don't really feel excited with today's current trends.
