Yes, Butts County is for real. The city of Jackson is there. It’s also where the death penalty for Georgia is carried out. Butts County is named for Samuel Butts who was an officer killed in the Creek War (1814).
In fairness to Sheriff Gary Long and Police Chief James Morgan, the picture and story were done by WSB-TV (an Atlanta television station owned by the Cox Media Group). That is who posted it on their Facebook then it was shared to on the Butts County Sheriff's Office page. It has had 1508 shares, 525 comments on the original WSB-TV Facebook page. The point of that statement? This was not posted by the BCSO. This wasn't a rinky dink redneck sheriff's office posting it but a major television station.
The inmate was actually a state prisoner, Danny Ray Bennett, who was serving time for felony convictions from Franklin County, GA. He escaped from a work detail.
