Clean energy sector swings GOP with campaign donations

U.S. solar and wind energy companies have donated far more money to Republicans than Democrats in congressional races this election cycle, according to a Reuters analysis of campaign finance data, an unprecedented tilt to the right for an industry long associated with the environmental left.

Renewable energy has typically depended on government subsidies and policies to help fuel its growth, and the donations come at a time when Republicans control both houses of Congress as well as a majority of state houses across the country. Republicans have so far left subsidies for the industry largely intact. “We support those leaders who share our vision,” said Arthur Haubenstock, vice president of policy and strategy at 8minutenergy Renewables LLC, a California-based solar project developer, and treasurer of a newly formed employee-funded political action committee that shares the company’s name. So far, the PAC has donated only to Republicans.

Before 2016, solar and wind companies mainly donated to Democrats, who were broadly seen as more supportive of policies that could help the nascent sector grow. In 2014, 70 percent of the contributions from seven major wind and solar PACs went to Democrats.

Just to respond to your thread title, it makes perfect sense. Democrats are already on board with cleaner, alternative energy.

So long as it's Pruitt's EPA, this is a waste of money, but their job is to influence people who are not inherently inclined to agree with them.

And, to influence the administration which has power to control Chinese solar imports et al.

Not sure about that. A lot of the midwest and other red states are big into wind, solar, geothermal etc. If these donations push their reps to vote in favor of renewables, thus saving jobs thats important. Also as the solar energy CEO says, "they too want less regulation" so that may come into play. They also know democrats would never vote against renewables (would they?) if the GOP gets fully on board as well so they think the money is well spent.

They can influence state governments, sure. But Pruitt is 100 percent owned by fossil fuels, especially oil and coal. It becomes more and more blatant by the day.

And who owns all those renewable patents? They mostly are owned by fossil fuels. They rampantly patent trolled in the late 90s and early 2000s and bought rights to many solar, wind etc patents. Fossil fuel companies will determine when they will be used.

Separate issue. Pruitt is using his authority to deregulate fossil fuels, key consumers of fossil fuels and make life harder for the green sector.

I suspect that "green energy sector" donors/lobbyists are more concerned with maintaining their federal subsidies than with eliminating environmental regulations.
