Days After Putin Summit, Trump Admin Aids Ukraine, Trashes Russia Proposal

Despite the friendly atmosphere at a press conference between Presidents Trump and Putin, the administration forged ahead in defending Ukraine from Russian aggression Friday with two major moves.

First, the White House, according to Reuters, shot down a proposal for a referendum in eastern Ukraine from Putin. The Russian president asked Trump to back a referendum in the eastern part of Ukraine, which is currently embroiled in a war between Russia-backed separatists and the Ukrainian government.

The White House said the potential vote had “no legitimacy,” rejecting the request:

“The administration is not considering supporting a referendum in the eastern Ukraine,” said Garrett Marquis, a spokesman for the White House National Security Council.

He added: “To organize a so-called referendum in a part of Ukraine which is not under government control would have no legitimacy.”

Russia organized a referendum (widely regarded as a sham election) in Crimea to justify its annexation of the formerly Ukrainian peninsula. Then, according to CNN’s Ryan Browne, the Defense Department sent $200 million in military aid to Ukraine. The aid will not include lethal weaponry, Browne reported, but the materials will nonetheless undoubtedly help Ukrainian forces in their battle against Russian aggression.

President Trump has previously authorized lethal aid to Ukraine. https://www.redstate.com/streiff/2017/12/20/president-trump-shows-hes-russian-asset-sending-lethal-aid-ukraine/

I am sure CNN will have a report on it. No? What? More Stormy Daniels.

The narrative is shot to hell by anyone that actually checks out Trump's performance against Russia vs. Barack Obama's. It's not even close how much tougher Trump has been.

Among those in denial is the refugee, and sole active moderator from DTT. Expert in all things Ukraine, not. Never taking Øbama inaction to task. Actually, Øbama seems to have been in Putin;s pocket, as in 'tell Vlad I'll have more flexibility'. Øbama, who sat though an hour of Putin lecturing about the evils of America.

Is there any proof that Donald Trump even knows what the NSC's policy is?

“The administration is not considering supporting a referendum in the eastern Ukraine,” said Garrett Marquis, a spokesman for the White House National Security Council.
this is the fall out from Trump's disastrous meeting with Putin in Helsinki...others in the administration are having to clarify what The US will not do...regardless of what Trump agreed to haphazardly.

DNI Dan Cotes was totally blind-sighted by Trump's tweet that Putin had been invited to come to DC in the fall.

Cotes is the US top Intel chief and he does not even know what Trump is up to.

This thread is friendly ground for this Russia Today op-ed:

Aftermath of Helsinki summit: American ‘democracy’ in action

After his landmark summit with Russian leader Vladimir Putin in Helsinki, US President Donald Trump was apparently forced into an embarrassing u-turn over allegations of Russian interference in American elections.

On returning to the White House from his summit in Finland, Trump read out a statement, saying that he “accepted” US intelligence claims that Russia had meddled in the 2016 presidential election.

He offered the explanation that he had “mis-spoken” during his press conference with Putin in Helsinki the day before, when he appeared then to accept the Russian president’s “powerful denial” that his country had not interfered in the race for the White House.

...The context of words spoken at the press conference in Helsinki does indeed suggest that Trump was countenancing Putin’s denial of Russian meddling. The US president went on to say that the various probes into the matter were a “disaster” for America’s international image and for bilateral relations with Russia. This is consistent with Trump’s long-held view that the Mueller inquiry is a “witch-hunt” based on “fake news”.

So, Trump’s belated about-turn on what he meant to say in Helsinki regarding alleged Russian interference does not seem to be a convincing, genuine correction on his part. It suggests rather that the president is being forced into making a retraction.

What could be viewed as more disturbing is the way the American president has been browbeaten and cowed to make an embarrassing denial of something he actually believes. In other words, Trump has been humiliated or intimidated into toeing a line....

It’s almost like immense pressure from the public and both sides of congress works!
It’s bonkers it took days for them to put out this statement.

I wonder if the president himself will say anything about this?
