There's a wonderful, wonderful PBS documentary about two fascinating American women, whose personal power drove them both to create a market for a product like "nice" women did not use.

These two were locked into a bitter rivalry for 50 years, and their insults are legendary.

Just amazing stuff!

2016 U.S. sales of skin care and"color cosmetics" was 30.5 billion dollars. This excludes hair and body care products.

In the early 20th century, this market did not exist. There were products that altered appearance, for the stage or used by sex workers, but they were grubby, under the counter type goods. Certainly not something any decent woman would wear.

Think of the obstacles these two faced. Women in business were unheard of. They were both famously demanding and hard-nosed. Their products were inextricably linked to the sexual freedom of women, and yet they created in Americans of all classes the belief that "nice ladies did not leave the house without being well-groomed".

No man in America achieved what these two did. There should be a statute of them outside every business school in the country.
