Ralph Northam was already a likely shoo-in, as opposed to a chiseled-in-stone victory of the sort that may be expected in New Jersey. This basically seals the deal. Massive, massive project scored under McAuliffe's auspices, and the race hinges on his job performance vs. continued rejection of Trump.

If things continue along their present course, the Republicans may be permanently disadvantaged in statewide Virginia elections.

Saw yesterday that the NRA is going to put a fortune into Gillespies campaign banking that the gun issue will be huge outside the metro DC area. Its all going to depend on turnout.

Northam is polling at a double-digit lead. McAuliffe is also broadly popular across the state, not just in the Beltway. It's very difficult to imagine the Democrats losing this race with an unpopular Republican in the White House to turn out the city voters in droves. Congress' misbehavior was enough to put Virginia's governorship out of reach for the GOP in 2013. At this point it's really a question of how many state legislature seats Northam can carry with him, and can he secure redisricting power.
