Watergate journalist Bob Woodward’s new book showcases the “harrowing life” of people within Donald Trump’s White House.

The Washington Post reported that the book, titled “Fear: Trump in the White House,” was kept under wraps at publishing house Simon & Schuster until recently.

The title comes from an interview Woodward conducted with Trump in April 2016 in which he said he believes power is derived from fear.

Woodward and Post reporter Robert Costa asked Trump if he agreed with a quote from President Barack Obama in which he said that “real power means you can get what you want without having to exert violence.”

“Well, I think there’s a certain truth to that,” Trump said in initial agreement with his predecessor. “Real power is through respect.”

He then added, however, that he thinks “real power is, I don’t even want to use the word: ‘Fear.’”

This book will be interesting as he used White House staff as his Deep Throat, never to be revealed but they gave permission for him to record them. They also brought him documentation.

If this is anything like his attention to detail with his Nixon reveal it may be an eye opener over the internal details.

That will be one interesting book because Woodward has been churning out one book a year defending Republicans. He was only on with Bernstein a couple of times after Trump was elected. It is clear Bernstein has no use for Trump, but Woodward?

I am actually shocked on this one!

I wondered why you only saw him a couple of times after Trump was selected. He had catered to Republicans who bought his books.

Guess Trump was too much for him.

No matter his leanings he is an old fashioned investigation reporter. That is how reporters were back in the day before news turned into AP feeds. That detail about him may dominate more than political leanings. We'll see though.

He was, is still, a Republican and he sure cut Bush Jr. a 'wide swath' about his sorry ass war! Undeservedly!

Yes, I have much more respect for Woodward after hearing about this book. First time he appeared with Bernstein Woodward was really nervous with little to say. He must have been getting the facts from Trump then. Makes sense now.

'Everyone talked with Woodward': Trump White House braces for new book

Unlike previous administrations, this White House had no process for making officials available to the legendary reporter.

By ANNIE KARNI 07/31/2018 05:23 PM EDT Updated 07/31/2018 06:18 PM EDT

Bob Woodward, the legendary Washington Post journalist, was sitting on the couch in press secretary Jay Carney’s office, presenting Obama administration officials with an offer they couldn’t refuse.

It was 2011, and Woodward was working on a book chronicling President Barack Obama’s debt-ceiling negotiations. He pulled out a secret memo written by Peter Orszag, the former budget director, that Woodward had obtained and which held potentially damaging revelations about the administration.

Participating in his project, Woodward said, would give people like Carney the opportunity to respond to such memos. Woodward then pointed to a safe that is kept in the press secretary’s office, which holds classified documents. “I’d like access to everything, including what’s in there,” he said, “some of which I might have already.”

The impression he left on the people in the room that day, according to a person familiar with the episode, was that they didn’t have much of a choice: Woodward knew everything, and if you didn’t participate, you were screwed.

We decided to put it all above board so that we at least had some visibility into it,” recalled Dan Pfeiffer, a former communications director for Obama, who said press aides would often sit in on interviews Woodward conducted with senior officials. “We put in place a process to facilitate cooperation to help shape a book that was going to be written.”

Now Woodward is taking on the Trump administration. Simon & Schuster, Woodward’s publisher, announced Monday that it plans to release his 19th book, entitled “Fear: Trump in the White House,” on Sept. 11.

But the process for managing the book has not been as formal in President Donald Trump’s White House – in fact, there hasn’t been any process at all. According to half a dozen former administration officials and people close to the administration, Woodward was never officially granted access to the White House or to the president, and the communications department did nothing to help him in researching or writing his book.

For example, when Woodward approached the then-National Security Council spokesman Michael Anton, with whom Woodward had worked closely on his books about the George W. Bush administration, about an interview with National Security Adviser H.R. McMaster, he was officially turned down, according to a person familiar with the request...
