After which the pundits will pick out what they think the candidates said and feed it to us second hand. Meanwhile, the opposition will pick out whatever they think the public might not like, exaggerate it, and repeat it over and over until it is seen as a major plank in the Democratic Party platform.

Welcome to American politics.

We should have a debate, then immediately go to commercials or cartoons or both, then have the election right away before the pundits and the opposition muddy the waters.

I'm with you. Debates feed people what they want to hear. Look at the GOP in 2016. 18 candidates, and Republicans picked the most ignorant, unqualified man in presidential history as their choice.
When I become king, the first thing I'll do is change the rules - presidential primary campaigning, fundraising, and debates start 90 days before election day, no earlier. The conventions are held 30 days prior to election day.
Think of all the $$ saved, and all the millions of hours of TV news time that could be devoted to something useful instead.

I hate that there are so many candidates because they are going to do what Democrats do so well, destroy their own
Ms. Isalexi,

You should think win-win. The more candidates, the more the donation pool is diluted, the more the dems fight it out between themselves, the less the President has to spend for his every growing campaign contribution war chest.
