Former CNN host Soledad O'Brien on Sunday tore into the network on Twitter, accusing the cable news network of offering a platform to racists and white supremacists to boost ratings.

Responding to a tweet from Oliver Willis, a writer for the progressive website ShareBlue Media, that called out the network for allowing "abhorrent behavior" under the guise of just "hearing them out," O'Brien said CNN gave "racists/white supremacists" a platform as a "ratings ploy."

"My major problem with how cnn operates is their anchors/hosts want to have their cake and eat it too," Willis wrote in one tweet. "They want credit for calling out abhorrent behavior but when they enable the same behavior they insist theyre just 'hearing them out.'"

O'Brien left CNN in 2013 after 10 years with the network.

It's the nature of for-profit media. At the end of the day, CNN's decisions are going to be based on a single consideration: making the shareholders of AT&T richer. Ratings aren't the only factor there -- they also think about how to curry favor with politicians who can hold up their mergers or otherwise hurt their corporate plans, for instance. And being highly rated overall isn't as valuable as being highly rated with certain sought-after demographics (younger, richer people -- especially ones who don't watch a lot of TV, so they're hard to reach). And they don't want to do anything that offends too many advertisers. But all of that plays into maximizing long-term value for AT&T stockholders. If giving a soap box to racists does that, that's what will happen. That's capitalist news for you.

Not all white people are racist...but most racists on TV tend to run that way.

Not all Republicans are racists, but tons do know or support racists.
