Because the country who exports more will lose the battle.
??? Exports are generally viewed as a very positive thing for an economy, as they contribute to GDP, whereas imports subtract from it.

Why on Earth do you view trade as a 'battle'??

When two individuals engage in a trade, as in a barter transaction, they generally do so because both perceive that they are BENEFITING from it. Voluntary trade is almost always a positive-sum, win-win game.

It is no different when nations engage in trade.

When one nation is importing billions more that it is exporting, the other nation is getting the better of the deal. This isn't rocket science, but it isn't as simple as your post suggests.

GOP lawmakers discuss vote to block Trump’s new tariffs on Mexico, in what would be a dramatic act of defiance
Republican lawmakers aren’t eager to be drawn into a conflict with the president. But some feel they might have to take action following a growing consensus within the GOP that these new tariffs would amount to tax increases on American businesses and consumers — something that would represent a profound breach of party orthodoxy.

I thought the Mexicans were supposed to pay for them?

And we find out Trump is Dumb like a fox... Mexico caved and is honoring it's agreement to secure it's southern border.

SMART TRUMP stupid Politicians.

No. No, the philosophy that you subscribe to is a now utterly defunct and intellectually bankrupt doctrine known as mercantilism, which was indeed the prevailing philosophy in Europe from roughly the 15th through the 18th centuries, but was completely demolished by the intellectual titans David Hume and Adam Smith:

The U.S. and Mexico failed to reach an agreement to avert sweeping tariffs during a Wednesday meeting between top officials from both countries, according to media reports.

The talks at the White House came just days before the Trump administration is set to impose 5 percent tariffs on all Mexican imports, part of an effort to get Mexico to stem the flow of migrants reaching the U.S.The Trump administration has said the tariffs, which are scheduled to take effect Monday, could increase to 25 percent by October if Mexico does not take more steps to curb illegal migration

The question now is whether the administration will go ahead with the tariffs as planned or engage in further negotiations with Mexican officials

US, Mexico fail to reach deal on tariffs: reports

Your move now Trump party.
I particularly enjoyed Trump's theatrics when he was waving that white piece of paper around claiming it was the agreement. Of course it was fake of course it was a lie of course there is no agreement at this point. Trimp lied, flat out lied. Why the hell would any country trust the word of the United States with Trump as its leader

Most Trump supporters are fully aware there are NeverTrumpers, and some are Republicans.

So, it doesn't surprise me, but Trump is smarter than they are and will reach a deal.

Btw, some Republicans don't want the wall and some of them want open borders. They are stupid, but nobody ever said all Republicans were smart.
Who wants open borders? There’s that extremism again ...spoken like a true
