Vasily Slepak was a talented Ukrainian singer whose name was known around former USSR.

For 19 years, he lived in France, in Paris, and performed in the Opera there

When war in the Donbass broke out, he returned to Ukraine, joined the nationalist Right Sector and became a militia fighter

Slepak was killed today by a separatist DNR sniper.

As I wrote here, both Russian and Ukrainian celebs have not only voiced support, but joined the fighting in Donbass on either side, and Slepak is the second Ukrainian singer to die there...

Rock singer Nikolai Gordiychuk, who was 29 and serving with the National Guard, was killed last year

So sad. Such a waste.

Nationalism and hatred, from both sides, is a fucking disease...

Apparently, there was a whole big battle today, near Debaltsevo, large group of Ukrop troops tried to fight through DNR defenses into the town of Logvinovo. Big battle, both sides deploying artillery and armor. At least six dead DNR, and a dozen or more Ukrainians, inclyding Slepak. The Ukrops were able to move about 4 km into DNR territiry, but then retreated back to where they came from, after reported "contact group" negotiations between Ukrainian, DNR, and Russian officers.

DNR fighters remain in full control of the area

Crazy. It could go back to full scale war at any moment...

Yeah well it seems like the war is far from over. Donbass soldiers probably want full control of donbass borders if not all noyvrussia, and ukrainians can not accept that. There must be clear winners and losers...

curiousou, LifeNews apparently found the DNR sniper who killed Slepak.

Apparently, Slepak was part of a Ukrainian unit that attempted to advance on DNR fighters near the village of Luganskoe, in the Gorlovka region, I believe. Slepak was manning a machine gun and was able to pin down a bunch of DNR guys. The sniper, identified only by nom de guerre as "Moryachok" ("Seaman" or "Sailor") came to his comrades aid. He said he didn't know at the time who he had killed, read about it online later lol Back then, in the moment, he was simply taking out a guy attacking his buddies with a machine gun. Didn't give a shit who the guy was, just the enemy, that's all.

He also, like me, thinks its a waste that such a talented guy died like this. But, adds that Slepak came on their, Donbass, land with a gun, not vise versa :smiley-shrug:

Poroshenko, of course, awarded Slepak a posthumous medal for bravery. He was buried in his hometown, Lviv.

Aren't YOU a Russian "nationalist"?
No. Because the nationalism, over there at least, is ETHNIC. Russian nationalists believe they, ethnic Russians, are superior in every way to minorities in Russia and to other people around them in former USSR, on an inborn, genetic level. Ukrainian nationalists, meanwhile, believe they are, in fact, superior to Russians as an ethnic group. This goes back to the neverending dispute over who are the true, pure genetic descendants and historic and cultural heirs of the original half-Slavic half-Viking Rus people which are ancestors of both those peoples plus the Belarusians (who are much smaller and less stuck up about it all lol).

Its all a question of blood. I don't have nearly enough said blood to even be a part of that insane conversation, and thank God for tbat...

And yet, you always seem to have aready insult for tribal groups inside Russia, who are not your tribal group. Sounds pretty nationalist, by way of ethnicity to me.

By the way, you do understand that this is a mostly American board, based in America, and in pursuit of debate on American news and politics, right? Nobody much cares whats going on in some battle in the Ukraine. Or the differences between the factions there. It's why we do have a sub-forum for news and political interests in Russia and the surrounding area.

This part of the forum isn't it.
