Already gave away 50 billion...
Certainly noble. Kudos Bill.

But Gates and Buffet and Soros (and etc) still live grand lives and have more money than they could ever need. Are they mentally ill?

Question to you (and the OP). How much should an individual be allowed to have? And who gets to make that call? Should it matter how many people they are keeping employed...??

Well, we already know the opposite to this - accumulating someone else's wealth, or telling them the over/under on what is too much and what isn't. A form of greed in and of itself.

There's no such thing as vicarious compassion. You don't get points for someone else's contributions.

I think you are misunderstanding my point:

Many people devote their lives to something that makes them very wealthy.
That is a good thing for them and society.
I'm talking about people who make the mere acquisition of more wealth their live's work. (Think inherited wealth)

In other words acquiring and having great wealth is more important to them than what they can do with that wealth.
People like D. Trump NEED that wealth to feed their egos. They judge themselves and others by the amount of money they have.
That's insanity in my book.

Suppose anything can be carried to the extreme. But suspect the premise of the thread is meant to distort.

The ambition for wealth and power is about as old an mankind itself.

No doubt there are some cases where that gets taken to excess. But for the most part the desire certainly isn't a "mental disorder".

..
Depends on what you desire, I guess. I think a lot of incredibly wealthy people develop unhealthy appetites, just look at people like Jeffrey Epstein. It's become perfectly normal for rich men to dump their families to run off with some trophy wife who's 20 or 30 years their junior. Some do it numerous times.

When you begin to use wealth as an excuse to be increasingly amoral and self indulgent, it's a problem. Just because you can doesn't mean you should.

So what rights do those of modest means have when injustice is perpetrated on them by the wealthy and powerful? Antitrust laws weren't some socialist idea. We allow people who are charged with crimes to have court appointed lawyers in the hopes the innocent won't go to jail.

It's not a question of how much is too much, but rather has the money being used to corrupt others who don't have any? More and more I see the US trending towards becoming a place where the concept of fairness is skewed towards the wealthy as if it entitles them to more rights and privileges than anyone else. The "makers and takers" thing.

A good example of this is the normalization of giving millions or even billions of our tax dollars to companies promising jobs, while the outrage over someone spending EBT money on steak keeps growing. The taxpayers routinely foot the clean up bill when multimillion dollar businesses destroy our natural resources, then they complain they're overregulated.

Money is as money does, IMO.
