The oldest partisan debate in this country was between the Federalists and the Democrat-Republicans.

Jefferson vs. Hamilton.

Which side would you put yourself on if you lived in post-revolutionary Amerca? Which party's policies line up most with your views? What are your thoughts on the rivalry between the two men.

Jefferson advocated for states rights and for the agrarian population vs. the urban population. Hamilton was for centralizing things under the federal government.

I think Hamilton would have appreciated what Obama is doing trying to grab hold of all things under the federal control such as healthcare. Since Hamilton was for a centralized bank I think he would have also been for what Obama is doing seizing control of banks too.

I would most definitely be for a more conservative based Jefferson.

The Federalists (Hamilton) split in two and became the Democratic Party (Andrew Jackson , now Obama) and in opposition the National Republicans. the National Republican party soon faded But Andrew Jackson's Democratic party is still alive today.

In opposition to the Federalists was the Anti Federalists (Jefferson). The Anti Federalists were replaced by the Democraic Republican party (Jefferson). The supporters and members of the Democratic Reublicans became the Whig party (in opposition to Andrew Jackson). Within the Whig party was division over the issue of slavery. Members of the Whig party quit and eventually switched to the Republican party (still alive and kicking today). For example Abe Lincoln quite the Whig party and eventually switched and helped form the Republican party.

No, it really isn't. The current Democratic Party is largely the brainchild of FDR.

It is only a shift in the manor in which to get massive central control. Before it was simply through political muscle and keeping the engine of slavery growing. Now it is about class warefare, pitting the recipients of state aid against those that pay for it. But in the end it is just a tool to get strong central control.

Class warfare *laughs* Read a little too much Communist Manifesto there?

There is nothing wrong with a unitary state, it is more conducive to a unified and successful Republic.

How many people rallied around Obama to get free healthcare? A chicken in every pot. Almost half of the US population is receiving some federal aid now. It is the highest it has ever been by a long shot.
