Yeah, I do understand that. Trump is terrible on deficits and the debt. Not nearly as bad as Obama, though. Obama had an excuse early in his presidency.

But why were deficits rising in his last year in office?
Aren't you setting the bar a little high? The federal deficit has risen every year since 1957.

I see... So what's your litmus test to distinguish "idealism" from "exaggeration?"
Exaggeration--Building a wall for security reasons is National Security. Making Mexico PAY for it? Said it would happen. Probably meant he would TRY. Idealist? AOC wants a whole new system whereby everyone "Contributes" according to their ability to PAY ,and everyone ,no matter what ,get a slice of the pie. Warren concurs.

So you don't think that Trump was being remotely idealistic when he said that the wall would be literally free to the American taxpayers? It sounds to me like the difference is nothing more than the political ideology of the speaker.

Right - but do you conceded that Trump may not have been entirely truthful with that particular aspect of his platform? Do you honestly believe that Trump intended to somehow force a foreign government to spend billions of dollars on a border wall?

More to the point - if Trump had campaigned on the promise that the planned to levy a federal tax in order to fund a border wall, do you think he would have been elected?
Yes I do.

I believe that is an incorrect statement.
My wording was poor - 1957 was the last year in which we had a surplus, rather than a deficit. Since then, there has always been a deficit; the amount might tick up or down, but the deficit was omnipresent for the past 60+ years. (Source)

And in that time, only one President (Bill Clinton) successfully reduced the deficit levels down to the levels seen by previous presidents.

I kinda thought that one sounded fishy.

Thanks for clarifying.

Hey, we all make mistakes...
