"Incensed, Mr. Karzai extended an invitation of his own — to Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, the Iranian president, who flew to Kabul and delivered a fiery anti-American speech inside Afghanistan’s presidential palace."

Afghan Leader Is Seen to Flout Influence of U.S. - NYTimes.com

(Just heard about this recent incident. If the topic was discussed on this forum i must have missed it.)

At a time when we are pouring blood and treasure into that country (Afghanistan), it was a little stunning to hear that Ahmadinejad was provided an audience at the presidential palace. Which he apparenlty took advantage of to flame the USA.

Not particularly surprising. Iran is a major regional power and a big trader in the region.
Ahmadinejad is a joke... but inviting him was probably a good way to reach out to the real powers in Iran.

From the content of the article the invite had nothing to do with trade relations/negotiations. Suggestion is/was that Karzai was breaking one off in our (USA) collective ass as a public rebuke for a perceived insult.

Really would be interesting to see a video of the Ahmadinejad speech. Along with the response/reaction of the audience to his words.
