BuzzFeed is laying off 15 percent of its workforce, about 215 employees, next week as it seeks to achieve profitability.
The cutbacks are part of a wave of recent media layoffs.
Verizon Communications is cutting about 7 percent of its digital-media operations, a business that includes AOL, Yahoo and the Huffington Post, Bloomberg reported. Gannett Inc. also has been laying off journalists from its collection of newspapers nationwide.
Jonah Peretti, BuzzFeeds CEO , sent a memo to his 1,450 employees on Wednesday in which he explained that efforts to diversify revenue weren’t enough to help the company achieve profitability, according to The Hollywood Reporter.
Bad week for the media.

A few years ago when a bunch of coal miners were laid off, President Obama said they should learn how to code. And sycophant journalists obediently repeated him with numerous articles telling coal miners that they should look for new career options in coding.
Now journalists are salty that when layoffs hit them, a bunch of smartasses in social media have been telling laid off reporters that they should learn to code.
