Michael Brown’s mother Lezley McSpadden announces 2019 run for Ferguson City Council

On August 10, 2018, a small group of family, friends, media and supporters of the movement that his death sparked stood on hand as Brown’s mother Lezley McSpadden prepared to make an announcement. The bright signs were held up that said “Lezley McSpadden for Ferguson City Council” scooped her big reveal before she made her way to the front of the bronze memorial plaque that bears his name.

McSpadden pointed out three platforms that she plans to focus on upon election after telling the crowd she is speaking a successful campaign election into existence. They include: community policing, economic equality and access to quality healthcare.

“This is very important to me – and I know a lot of people wonder what makes me qualified,” McSpadden said. “Because I watched my son lay in that very spot where those trails of bears are – that makeshift memorial – for four and a half hours…four and a half hours. They disrespected an entire community, disregarded us. And when I’m elected, they will learn to respect us.”

McSpadden hopes to use her political career as a platform to envision and work towards a Ferguson beyond the trauma that the city, the region and the nation experienced because of her son’s tragic death.

“We know that the community and the police, that bridge has been burned – and I want to work on rebuilding it,” McSpadden said. “When I am elected, I will not give up.

I will be the people’s voice, and not just the people’s choice.”

Whether Mrs. McSpannen is qualified or wins...it is good to see people not just #Walkaway. That is the true American way.

I don't know if the sympathy vote is gong to be enough to win her the seat. There was alot of unnecessary destruction in Ferguson. People remember that and are still trying to rebuild.

There are other reformers already voted into city positions in Ferguson.

Steve Scalise is going to run for the house speaker position. I expect he will receive tons of sympathy votes.

He was shot by a lunatic liberal during a charity softball practice and was a seated representative. Quite a bit of difference from a city council seat where the city was destroyed and you approved of it because your son attacked a police officer when he confronted for committing a crime.

Don't know if staring at her dead son for 4 1/2 hours qualifies a person.

It would certainly make an impact on her life, I'm sure.

MB was a thug who got killed for attacking a cop, but I don't know how much she contributed to his evil ways.

Dad was no prize either: "Burn this bitch down!" seems to be his claim to fame...

But, if they vote her in, I hope she does a great job.

Ferguson has made a lot of progress and has been praised in federal court and multiple other oversight forums for it.

If the electorate deems her qualified, all the best to her, but she shouldn't ride her rage, however justifiable, on a path to political power.

Let's hear what her ideas are and compare them against her opponents.

I hope she reinstated Officer Wilson back to the Force, since it was found her son attacked him and forced him to defend himself.

I don't believe anyone has made that finding in any kind of official setting. Can you educate us on this, or are you making stuff up again?

To be clear, especially in light of the prosecutor's defeat in the recent primary, the decision to not prosecute Wilson isn't an affirmation of his actions.

Lets see

1 Grand Jury made that finding.
2. US Justice Department made that Finding. (Commission appointed by Eric Holder)
3. Missouri Department of Investigation made that Finding
4. Local Police made that finding.

That was why Officer Wilson was not charged with crime of Manslaughter (State) , or Charged with a Crime of Violating Browns Civil Rights (Federal)
