Modern wars have become prohibitively expensive.
By no means am I excusing US debt -- it's a big, bright, flashing neon arrow pointing to unaccountable, out-of-control government -- but Canada's population is around 4.5 million fewer than California's, and you Canucks have managed to accrue a national debt of around $1.2 trillion (comparable to California's staggering real debt)...all while spending only 1% of your GDP (considerably less than the 2% NATO requires of member nations) to protect your blood and treasure (while the US spends approximately 3.3%...umm...you know, protecting your blood and treasure ;) )

So, yeah...there's not much moral high ground there, and the perch is shaky.
