They may as well be. You can't have have an opt out option if you are going to implement a national healthcare service. If you allow people to just decide they aren't going to be part of the program and not pay taxes toward it then it won't work. It would just go bankrupt because all the people who can afford good healthcare or have nice union contracts (like these people) will just opt out of it - and we won't be able to fund it. And I can't really blame them in some respects, because it makes little sense to pay for healthcare twice.

So this opt in opt out nonsense is a load of shit. It'll never work, and they know it won't. It's corporate propaganda. Do you think we could pay for medicare now if everyone under 65 opted out?

So do you support giving people the option to opt out of medicare as it currently is now?

All these elderly democrats supporting Buttigieg because of his stupid opt in shit are being incredibly selfish. I say let's turn the tables and let people opt out of paying for their medicare, then let's see how much they love his plan. Oh I bet his support would dry up in a hurry then. haha

Thats been part of the problem we have seen with Medicare for all. The strong unions dont want it as they have negotiated pay and great benefits as part of their packages. We have a brewery nearby that just unionized and they even have a nurse on staff at all times and a doctor once a week for visits. No need to leave for appointments, and they can get checkups or go ask questions. They love it.
They also realize that even if it is an opt in system, the rank and file will still have to pay in through the new taxes required to fund it.

The union will not endorse for 2020..

The Culinary Union, the most influential union in Nevada politics, has decided to stay out of the state's Democratic presidential caucuses, denying candidates who aggressively courted the group from getting a major leg up in the upcoming contest.

“We have weighed each candidate and believe the best thing we can do for Nevada, for our members and for greater voter participation, is to focus not on delivering for a candidate, rather to deliver voters to the caucus and then to the general election,” Geoconda Argüello-Kline, the secretary-treasurer for the Culinary Union, will say at a Thursday afternoon news conference, according to prepared remarks.

Same reason that employers oppose MFA, they have control of health care benefits and costs now, they would loose that control and still have to pay in through taxes.

Sounds like rank and file revolted and leadership backed down.
